1.) The Current State of IR35
In 2021, IR35 or “Intermediaries Legislation” was amended in an attempt to discourage “disguised employees” from being treated as self-employed contractors. This meant that those deemed as falling within IR35 would need to pay the same income tax as if they were employed and that the employing company would be liable for providing statutory benefits such as sick pay and pensions.
The costs of falling afoul of IR35 are serious for both freelance consultants and clients, but the cost of creating barriers to the marketplace of independent expertise for specialized projects is also significant.?
High-level test cases have given us a clear idea of how HMRC (Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs) is looking to enforce IR35— and being informed will help clients access independent consultants without violating the legislation.?

2.) The Impact of Carbon Taxation on Supply Chains in China
by?Johan Annell
As the effects of climate change grow more and more visible, and the world has become determined to take rapid action, there are significant risks and opportunities for European companies with supply chains in China. Many companies in European markets that have producers or suppliers in China currently do not assess carbon footprint in their supply chains. In?Asia Perspective’s 2021 sourcing survey, 70% of responding companies do not assess the carbon footprint of new suppliers in China.
The European Union will start to demand carbon footprint data from 2023 and introduce a carbon border tax from January 2026. Currently, emissions are taxed much lower in China than in Europe. A likely outcome of Chinese reforms and European carbon border taxes is that costs will increase significantly for emission-intensive imports. Companies need to start acting now to get data for compliance in 2023 and take this opportunity to assess carbon risks and mitigation actions together with suppliers.

3.) Women Thrive as Independent Consultants
Over the past several years, consultancies across the globe have worked to increase gender equality. However, there are still fewer women than men in the consulting industry. When it comes to self-employment, men significantly outnumber women at 65% of our consultant pool. In the world of independent consulting, self-employment and consulting intersect.?
What can we learn from the women who choose this professional path??

4.) Voices of Sustainability:?Arcturus.io
Today, there’s a need for making better-informed decisions to rebuild the economy and achieve a sustained reduction in carbon emissions. However, there are very few metrics to really measure this. And the available metrics, at least on a company level, are not very forward-looking for decision-makers or people who want to invest.

This doesn’t just apply to the retail investor who wants to have an aligned sustainable portfolio, but also the banks that remain critical capital providers and need to fund things like new power plants, oil and gas companies, or solar parks.
Additionally, there are trillions of dollars that, over the next couple of years, need to be invested to achieve sustainability targets.
Arcturus was built to address these issues.
