Trench cutter system

  • Cutter Wheel: This is the primary cutting tool that rotates to excavate the soil. It has various cutting teeth or bits attached to it, which break up and remove the soil.

  • Mud Pump: A mud pump is used to supply high-pressure slurry or drilling fluid to the cutting wheel. This fluid serves several purposes, such as cooling the cutting teeth, stabilizing the trench walls, and transporting the excavated material to the surface.

  • Suction Box: The suction box, also known as the suction system, is responsible for drawing the excavated material and slurry from the trench bottom to the surface. It typically consists of a suction pipe and a pump.
  • Gearbox: The gearbox is responsible for transmitting power from the engine to the cutter wheel. It allows for the adjustment of the cutter wheel's rotational speed, which can be crucial in different soil conditions.
  • Hydraulic System: Trench cutters are often equipped with a hydraulic system to control the movement of various components, such as the cutter wheel's vertical and horizontal positioning.
  • Support Structure: The trench cutter is mounted on a support structure, which can include a base frame, tracks or wheels for mobility, and a cabin for the operator.
  • Engine: A powerful engine provides the necessary energy to drive the cutter wheel, mud pump, and other hydraulic systems.

The working principle of a trench cutter system involves the following steps:

1. The cutter wheel is positioned at the starting point of the trench.

2. The mud pump starts circulating drilling fluid through the cutter wheel and into the trench, which helps keep the temperature down and transports the excavated material.

3. The cutter wheel begins to rotate, and its cutting teeth break up the soil and rock within the trench, which is mixed with the drilling fluid.

4. The suction system simultaneously removes the slurry and excavated material from the trench and sends it to the surface for separation.

5. The trench cutter moves forward, gradually excavating the trench to the required depth and width.

This process is repeated until the trench is complete, and the excavated material is disposed of or used for other purposes, depending on the project requirements. The trench cutter system's design and components can vary based on the specific manufacturer and model.
