Trekking to Everest Base Camp

Trekking to Everest Base Camp

Introduction

Reaching Everest Base Camp (EBC) is a dream for many adventure seekers. Nestled at an altitude of 5,364 meters (17,598 feet) in the Khumbu region of Nepal, EBC serves as a starting point for climbers aiming for the summit of Mount Everest. However, the trek to EBC is an incredible adventure in itself, offering stunning views, rich culture, and a sense of achievement.

Preparation

Proper preparation is essential for a successful trek to EBC. Fitness training, acclimatization strategies, and essential gear selection are critical. A good mix of cardio, strength training, and hiking will help build endurance. It’s also advisable to spend some time at higher altitudes prior to the trek to help with acclimatization.

The Trek

The journey typically starts from Lukla, where trekkers fly in and begin their adventure. The trail winds through picturesque villages like Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, and Dingboche, each offering unique insights into Sherpa culture and stunning mountain views. The trek usually takes around 12 to 14 days, with rest days included to allow for proper acclimatization.

My Experience with EBC

Day 1: The Journey Begins

Our adventure commenced at 11:30 PM in Kathmandu, embarking on a long drive to Ramechaap. Due to road closures, we had to take an alternative route, which turned the journey into a grueling 10-11 hour trip. We arrived at Ramechaap Airport the next morning at 9:30 AM, only to face our first hurdle: the weather in Lukla was cloudy. Our plans to fly to Lukla that day were dashed, forcing us to spend the entire day and night at Ramechaap.

Day 2: Flight to Lukla and First Day of Trekking

We woke up early, eager to catch the 5:40 AM flight to Lukla. After a brief 20-minute flight, we finally landed in Lukla at 7 AM. The flight delays had made breakfast a welcome necessity before we set off.

By 8 AM, we began our trek from Lukla (2,850 meters). The first day’s trail led us almost 200 meters downhill. We arrived in Phakding (2,610 meters) by 11:30 AM, where we enjoyed a hearty lunch.

After our break, we resumed trekking and reached Monjo (2,780 meters) at 3:30 PM. Exhausted but exhilarated, we settled in for the night, resting and preparing for the adventures that lay ahead.

Day 3: The Trek to Namche Bazaar

Morning Routine

Our day began early, with a call for breakfast at 6:30 AM. The meal planning was meticulous; we had to order our breakfast the previous evening during dinner, lunch at breakfast, and dinner during lunch. This system ensured that everyone was well-fed and ready for the day ahead.

Rising at 5:30 AM, we took quick showers and prepared for the day. By 6:30 AM, we were in the dining area, enjoying a nourishing breakfast that would fuel our journey.

The Ascent to Namche Bazaar

After breakfast, we embarked on one of the most challenging sections of our trek: the ascent to Namche Bazaar (3,340 meters). The climb was steep, requiring us to gain almost 600 meters in elevation. Each step tested our endurance as we navigated the rugged terrain.

Finally, after hours of trekking, we reached Namche Bazaar at 12:30 PM. The temperature had noticeably dropped as we ascended, adding to the fatigue of the journey. Despite the exhaustion, the vibrant atmosphere of Namche Bazaar, with its colorful shops and stunning views, invigorated our spirits. We took a moment to soak in our surroundings and prepare for the adventures that awaited us in this bustling mountain hub.

Day 4: Trekking to Deboche

Skipping Acclimatization

Although today was meant to be an acclimatization day, we decided to push on to our next destination, Deboche. We had already lost a day in Ramechaap, and the team was eager to make up for lost time.

Morning Routine

As usual, we woke early and made our way to the dining hall by 6:30 AM for breakfast. After fueling up, we set out on the trail to Deboche (3,730 meters).

Challenging Terrain

The trek proved to be more demanding than the previous day. Despite only gaining about 300 meters in altitude, the up-and-down nature of the terrain felt like a climb of nearly 700 meters. Many sections were steep and required significant effort.

We stopped for lunch at Phunki Tenga, resting and recharging before continuing our journey. On our way, we took the opportunity to visit the beautiful Thyangboche Monastery, which offered breathtaking views and a glimpse into the serene spiritual life of the Sherpas.

Arriving in Deboche

By 5:00 PM, we finally reached Deboche, tired yet exhilarated from the day’s trek. After refreshing ourselves, we gathered in the dining area, where we played a fun game of charades that lifted our spirits and brought plenty of laughter.

After a delightful dinner, we retired for the night, reflecting on the day’s challenges and camaraderie, ready for what lay ahead.

Day 5: Trekking to Dingboche

Our journey began early again at 7 AM as we set out toward Dingboche (4,340 meters). The trail offered stunning views and a sense of anticipation for the days ahead. We stopped for lunch at Tsomare around 10:30 AM, enjoying a well-deserved break.

By 2:30 PM, we arrived in Dingboche, excited to settle in for a two-day stay. One of these days would be dedicated to acclimatization, allowing our bodies to adjust to the altitude.

After freshening up and resting for a while, we gathered in the dining room to unwind. We played cards, sharing laughs and stories while we waited for dinner to be served. After a hearty meal, we retired for the night, ready to rest our weary bodies.

Playing Cards

Day 6: Acclimatization and Relaxation

The next day was a relaxing one. We woke up at 8 AM and headed to the dining hall by 8:30 AM for breakfast. Afterwards, we decided to explore a nearby mountain, gaining approximately 300 meters in altitude. This short trek was perfect for acclimatization, and we returned by 12 PM.

After lunch, we took it easy for the rest of the day, allowing our bodies to adjust to the elevation. In the evening, we played cards and various games, enjoying each other’s company as the temperature fluctuated between -7 to 10 degrees Celsius.

The two days in Dingboche were a great balance of effort and relaxation, setting us up for the challenges ahead on our trek to Everest Base Camp.

After a restful day in Dingboche, we resumed our journey to Lobuche (4,920 meters), known as one of the coldest villages on the trail to Everest Base Camp. We started our trek at the usual time, 7 AM, feeling refreshed and ready for the challenge ahead.

The Ascent to Thukla

We arrived at Thukla by 10:30 AM and took a much-needed break to regroup. With warm coffee in hand, we prepared for the next leg of our journey: a steep climb of nearly 200 meters.

Challenges of the Climb

I reflected on my experiences since day one, realizing that the initial 30-45 minutes of walking or climbing is often the toughest part. Once the body warms up, the trek becomes more manageable. I focused on a few key strategies to make the ascent easier: taking small, steady steps, sipping water frequently to stay hydrated, and allowing for very short breaks. I learned that taking a longer break could lead to my body cooling down, making it much harder to start again.

After conquering the steep climb, we continued on the trail for another 45 minutes, finally reaching Lobuche just in time for lunch. The sense of accomplishment was palpable, and as we settled in, I couldn’t help but appreciate the beauty surrounding us and the resilience we were building.

Day 7: Reaching Everest Base Camp

Today was the day we had all been waiting for: our planned trek to Everest Base Camp (EBC). We set out from Lobuche at 7 AM, filled with anticipation and excitement for what lay ahead.

Journey to Gorakshep

The trek to Gorakshep (5,170 meters) was relatively short, and we reached our destination by 10:30 AM. Upon arrival, we settled into our rooms, feeling a mix of relief and eagerness. After a brief rest, we gathered for lunch at noon, refuelling for the final leg of our journey.

The Final Push to EBC

At 12:45 PM, we set out for EBC, our ultimate goal. The trail was challenging, but the motivation kept us going. As we walked, the excitement in the air was palpable. By 2:30 PM, we finally arrived at Everest Base Camp.

The feeling of standing at the foot in EBC was indescribable. Happiness, excitement, and a profound sense of accomplishment washed over us. It was a moment we had dreamed of, and achieving it together made it even more special. We celebrated our arrival, taking in the breathtaking views and cherishing the memories we had created along the way.

Day 9: Return to Kathmandu and Mumbai

After an unforgettable journey, we began our trip back home. We flew from Gorakshep to Lukla, savouring our final views of the majestic mountains.

Upon arrival in Lukla, we boarded a flight to Kathmandu. After a brief rest and reflection on our incredible trek, we prepared for our journey back to Mumbai.

It was a bittersweet end to an adventure filled with challenges, triumphs, and lasting memories. We returned home with stories to share and a deeper appreciation for the beauty of the Himalayas.

Final Reflections

A big shoutout to the entire group: Vivek Singh , Vinod Nair , Amitabhh, Ashutosh Agrawal, John, Hemal Shah, Varun Shah, Teji Paji, Sona Bhabhiji, and Yadnya! I had a fantastic team, with each member being incredibly supportive and motivating. We shared countless laughs and fun moments throughout the journey.

Special thanks to Jayesh Bhai, our leader, guide, and organizer, whose efforts made this adventure possible. We also had wonderful local support from Norbu, Uttar, and Ganesh, who were always joyful and smiling, ensuring we had the best tea houses available at each destination.

This trip was truly memorable, and I’m grateful to have shared it with such an amazing group!
