As the evenings start to draw in the trees begin their annual display of beautiful autumn hues – tinges of reds and golds are emerging, and the inevitable dropping of the leaves begins. On a crisp, sunny day there is something wonderful about a long walk through the countryside, shuffling the leaves with your feet, although given the current state of the weather this may be more of a wade than a shuffle! This month the BS 5837 consultation comes to a close, finalising a long-overdue revision of their guidance on trees in relation to design, development and construction. We reviewed this last month and you can catch up on our thoughts on this by following the link in the newsletter below.
Also released recently was the National Tree Safety Group’s (NTSG) second edition of its Common Sense Risk Management of Trees. Originally published in 2011, this comprehensive guidance has been updated to align better with changes in the position of the Health and Safety Executive regarding the separation between criminal and civil law liability. The second edition is still based on the same five principles as the original, but now discusses tree risk management in relation to these two contrasting starting points.
Perhaps the most exciting news this month however is the Tree Frontiers team entry into the Oxford Half Marathon! In just a few days’ time we will tackle this challenge, and would certainly prefer a bright, sunny day for it rather than any more rain. We are hoping to reach our fundraising target of ￡1,000 by the end of the week, so if any more of you (thanks to those who already have!) are able to sponsor us we’d be delighted.
We are raising funds for Tiny Forest, who create forest environments in small urban spaces, thereby bringing all the benefits that trees can provide to areas that need them most.?They have a goal of 600 Tiny Forests across the UK by 2030.? Spruce tree planting restricted in parts of UK
Planting of spruce trees in parts of East Anglia and South East England is to be restricted as part of additional new measures announced by the Forestry Commission today (Tuesday 8 October) following further findings this season of?Ips typographus, also known as the eight-toothed spruce bark beetle. The new restrictions come after further findings this year, including the first UK finding of Ips typographus on Sitka spruce?in July, and are part of the continued action being taken to limit the spread of the beetle and protect our nation’s trees, forestry and timber industries.
Draft BS5837 Consultation Closes
For any in the arboricultural industry that have not yet registered comments on the draft of BS5837 have until 16th October. Feedback is vital in ensuring that the documents serves the needs of arboricultural consultants and tree officers.
The Forestry Commission has confirmed findings of the plane lace bug (Corythucha Ciliata) tree pest in Central London and Kent over the last few weeks.? A native to North America and now widespread across mainland Europe. The plane lace bugs are tiny hitch hikers that can get around on cars, clothes and bags.? They weaken?and damage?plane trees by sucking their sap, and make trees susceptible to other pests and diseases that can cause death in combination with fungal infections. They have also been reported to bite people, causing a mild rash.? The Forestry Commission has?asked anyone to report any suspected findings via their online portal TreeAlert.?
The THP?scheme update
The tree health pilot (THP) scheme grants are open for owners and managers of trees or woodlands in England. The latest updates include?guidance for the oak processionary moth (OPM) grant.
The scheme aims to slow the spread of pests and diseases affecting trees by providing funding to contribute to the cost of agent advice and training, responses to a Statutory Plant Health Notice (SPHN) and improving the ability to identify and deal with tree health issues.?
Secrets of Scotland's plant species revealed
Scientists are unlocking the genetic secrets of some of Scotland's favourite plant species that will bring an?understanding of how plants adapt in the face of environmental change.? The Darwin Tree of Life (DToL) project is an initiative that aims to sequence the genomes of all 72,000 plants, animals, fungi and other living organisms across the UK and Ireland.
"Where are our green spaces going?"
Open Spaces Society has expressed its concern over the government's revised National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF). Case officer Nicola Hodgson has responded to the consultation with '‘The government misses the opportunity to improve the process for creating and managing LGS, which can only be designated when a local plan is being reviewed or a neighbourhood plan progressed.? This severely restricts the opportunity to use the designation and to protect much-loved open space."?
Has the solution to carbon capture been found?
Keynote speaker at the Royal Horticultural Society Greener Cities Symposium, Professor Fraser Torpy , introduced a new green wall concept that could be the ultimate solution to urban air pollution. The Junglefy- Part of the Folia Network breathing wall is different from a typical green wall as it has hidden fans in the plants' foliage - through moving air through the plant's root system the natural process of bio-filtration is accelerated and more pollutants are removed from the air, faster.?
Calls to withdraw the Oxford Local Plan 2024
Local Plan Inspectors have recommended the council withdraw the Local Plan 2040. The letter to the council explained that they considered a failure of duty to cooperate and that surrounding districts should have been more involved with the technical study into our housing need.?

Opportunity to request a Sycamore Gap sapling
A partnership jointly led by the National Trust and Northumberland National Park Authority and Historic England have been working to find inspiring ways to continue the legacy of the iconic Sycamore Gap tree.
The 'Trees of Hope' initiative offers people around the UK the opportunity to request one of the 49?Sycamore Tree saplings?(one to represent each foot of the felled tree). It's hoped the saplings will be planted?in a publically accessible space so that people can engage with the Sycamore Gap Tree and its story.

Japanese planting method sees a?higher survival rate for trees
Urban trees planted in poor quality soil using a method inspired by a Japanese botanist return higher survival rates than standard approaches, which could make it more cost-effective to establish trees, according to new trial results. The ‘Trees Outside Woodland’ project, a partnership led by The Tree Council , Defra, and Natural England seeks to identify cost-effective methods that could be adopted by local authorities to increase tree canopy cover in England.

Keep us running at the Oxford Half
This weekend on 13 October, we'll be taking to the streets of Oxford in our Team Tree Frontiers first Half Marathon.? We have been training hard on our local streets, along beaches, around lakes and up some unexpected hills! Tree Frontiers were approached by a private client who was seeking advice regarding the health and general condition of three trees located within her garden. We carried out an advanced tree condition assessment in order to provide the client with a long-term management strategy for these trees.
