Almost everyone has heard, "If a tree falls in the forest and no one is there, does it still make a sound?" This thought expirement is a simple, yet powerful, way to think about how we collect information and how it influences are reality. The question of HFT can be put into a similar thought expirement with, "If a bid lasts for 500 microseconds and we blink at 300 milliseconds, does it represent a legitimate order and price?" Not even getting into the philisophical arguments just keep in mind the math here, that 1 micro secon is 1/1000th of a millisecond and that assuming you are not blinking you need 250 milliseconds to send a signal to your finger to click on the bid.........
