Treating Plantar Warts Effectively
Foot warts, also known as plantar warts, are small growths with a rough texture that appear on the heels or other weight bearings areas of your feet, such as the ball of the foot.
Foot warts are caused by human papillomavirus (HPV). These viruses get access into your body through cuts, breaks or other weak spots on the foot’s surface. Contrary to popular belief, they grow into the skin, not out of it.
These warts create a small hole in the skin’s surface, making the surrounding skin thicken. Because of the dense nub around the wart, it’s common to feel pain when walking on the foot. However, that is the extent of the symptoms. There are no adverse health concerns related to the presence of a plantar wart.
Treatment of Plantar Warts
Most foot warts do not pose a challenge to your health. They go away without treatment within several months, though they sometimes persist for over a year. If your wart is painful or bothersome and it spreads around the surrounding areas of the foot, you should see podiatrist Gabriel Maislos, DPM, FACFAS, for safe and effective treatment.
