@MarkRhys the President of the ICAEW (Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales) set out his vision for the year ahead. In it he underscored the vital importance of supporting trustees and encouraging finance professionals to contribute their expertise to charities.? ?
It was great to read this call for action!?
The President highlighted the need to view it as a collective responsibility for those with professional finance qualifications to look at volunteering for boards and how much value it can bring to a person’s personal and professional development.
“A hugely rewarding experience, offering an opportunity to bring your skills and knowledge to bear in setting the strategic direction of an organisation. And it is an opportunity to put your professional experience at the service of a personal passion. Trusteeship is one of the most effective ways available to us, in modern times, of demonstrating good citizenship, and personal sacrifice in service of a higher good.”
We know the critical role that finance professionals play in ensuring effective governance and sustainability of charities but increasingly we know charities are finding it harder to recruit Treasurers to join their board and there are lots of vacant posts advertised through traditional avenues with little or no interest.?

It is certainly the case that there is a lack of knowledge – amongst finance professionals – in terms of what, practically, being a Trustee entails (both the scope of the role, and the time commitment) despite there being plenty of resource available to provide this insight (eg this guide by the Honorary Treasurers Forum, or guidance by the Charity Commission on the roles and Responsibilities of Trustees). It can also be difficult to reach these prospective Treasurers so there are challenges in ensuring that they are able to hear about/engage/apply to the vacancy.
This is where the knowledge and skills of TPP can help. Firstly, we understand a Board’s dynamics, requirements and challenges.?
Secondly, we have an unrivalled network of finance specialists which we can use to directly reach out to those who have expressed an interest in being a Charity Treasurer.? We can also utilise the extended network of our specialist finance team to reach a pool of candidates who may be interested. For those in the latter group, we are well versed in discussing the ins and outs of being a Trustee, what it would mean to them specifically and importantly find out what particular cause resonates with them.?
The Royal Osteoporosis Society, Dementia Carers Count and Overcoming MS are just three charities we’ve recently recruited Treasurers for.?

1 年It is not necessary for a Board to have a Treasurer, and in my experience if there is one it allows the other Trustees to defer all finance matters to them which is not how it should work. All Trustees need to be able to understand the financial position of the charity, not just the Treasurer.

1 年Someone who really "gets" the finances and who can help "translate" them for everyone's benefit is essential for any charity board. This could be a great way for you to help support a cause that really matters to you, and be the "arm-round-the-shoulder" for your fellow trustees; the executive team; and the generous benefactor/donator. A worthwhile read, and, if you'd like advice and support to help you find your dream role, Lisa and I are waiting to hear from you! ?? ?? ?? ?? ??
