TRE - How to Get The Metabolic Edge

Today in my group - 4 Weeks to a BETTER Menopause - we are talking about how to get the metabolic edge, yes, I'm talking about time-restricted eating.

Time-restricted eating is a type of intermittent fasting that allows a limited time for eating each day: Beginners go for 12:12 (12-hour eating window, followed by a strict fast for 12 hours), most would benefit from 14:10 (14 hours of fasting), and you can extend this for maximum benefit to 16:8.

To be clear, ‘fasting’ means ‘not eating’, and it also means ‘not having anything other than water, herbal tea or black tea or coffee’. The common misconception is that TRE delivers weight loss, regardless of what you consume in your eating 'window'. There's a little bit more to it than that. Done properly, there are many benefits, including:-

  • reduced inflammation
  • better blood sugar control
  • reduced risk of diabetes
  • enhanced detoxification
  • better hormonal appetite control involving leptin and ghrelin
  • improved heart health
  • slower ageing
  • better immunity
  • reduced risk of chronic disease
  • improved brain function and reduced risk of dementia
  • better stress management
  • better digestion
  • more diverse gut flora
  • faster recovery after exercise

Many of my clients find taking a break for 14-16 hours is really easy to fit into their lives. Start with the Beginner version on just two non-consecutive days this week to see how you get on. If you have thyroid issues, speak to your GP/healthcare practitioner before trying out TRE.

For women, I am a big supporter of TRE in sync with your monthly cycle. There is mounting research behind this showing the benefits and personally, it works really well for me. Important - There are different approaches for women at different life stages, such as the reproduction phase, perimenopause and post-menopause.
