Record surge in cargo thefts: Tapa reports highest incidents in july?
Cargo thefts hit an all-time high in July 2024, with 1,736 incidents reported, marking a 17.7% increase from February's previous record. TAPA’s EMEA database revealed €16.2 million in losses, with the UK, Germany, and Italy leading in thefts. Fuel thefts surged by 42.6%, while other targeted goods included metal, cash, and construction materials. Organised crime groups were particularly active during holiday periods, with thefts spreading across 31 countries, highlighting ongoing vulnerabilities in freight transport across Europe and beyond.?
Key bridge closures in North Rhine-Westphalia disrupt lorry transport amid renovation push?
North Rhine-Westphalia is accelerating its bridge renovation campaign as nearly 1,000 bridges face deterioration. The logistics industry is bracing for increased costs and delays due to new lorry restrictions on major bridges, including the Fleher Rhine and Josef-Kardinal-Frings bridges. Further bans in Duisburg are adding pressure on road freight routes. The state government has committed over €220 million to infrastructure repairs, aiming to complete renovations on 400 bridges in the next decade, while the logistics sector calls for more federal investment to mitigate disruptions.?
Poland expands SENT registration requirements for foreign transport companies?
Starting November 1, Poland will require faster SENT system registration for non-EU carriers transporting certain goods, aimed at reducing unfair competition. The updated regulation mandates that foreign companies outside the EU, EFTA, or Swiss Confederation register in SENT for cross-border goods transport. From January 2025, EU carriers transporting goods to or from non-EU countries in Poland must also comply. The law aims to protect Poland’s road transport sector and curb tax fraud, with penalties reaching 20,000 PLN for non-compliance.?
