As I watched Travis Hunter’s 2024 Heisman Speech, I saw a young man embracing the moment, his humanity, and all those who supported him in his journey to the Heisman Trophy. He reminded us that football can be about more than competition and entertainment.??Sports can teach valuable life lessons about leadership, perseverance, gratitude, humility, humor, and authenticity. His speech was a masterclass on how sports can inspire us to embrace our humanity. There were numerous lessons worth noting during his Heisman acceptance speech, I’ll highlight six that stand out for me:
1. Lead with Gratitude
Travis started with gratitude. He began by thanking God, expressing his faith and belief in something greater than himself. He thanked his coach, Deion Sanders saying, "Thank you, Coach. Love you, Coach." This is a powerful acknowledgment of appreciation for the guidance and support that helped shape his journey to that moment. Gratitude is an important yet often underestimated part of meaningful leadership. Gratitude grounds us in the present and reminds us to value those who contribute to our success. Who in your life deserves a heartfelt "thank you" today?
2. Share the Love
Travis understood that this moment was bigger than him. He recognized his parents, fiancée, family, teammates, and coaches by declaring, "I love you." His words remind us that life, like football, is a team sport. We don't succeed by ourselves. It's achieved through collaboration, shared effort, and sacrifice. Leaders share their success and acknowledge the contributions of others. How do you recognize and celebrate your team's efforts?
3. Put in the Work
Discipline, accountability, and relentless effort were the key to Travis's journey to the Heisman Trophy. He spoke about the hard hours, sleepless nights, and the responsibility he took to ensure his success. "Keep your foot on the gas," he said, emphasizing the importance of consistent effort. Beyond the field, he excels academically, proving that success requires balance and dedication. Discipline and accountability are non-negotiables for achieving excellence. Are you putting in the work necessary to reach your goals?
4. You Can Win in Spite of Setbacks
Travis Hunter shows us that success doesn't come without challenges. An early-season injury sidelined him for weeks, and many questioned if he could return to the same level of performance. His comeback was a testament to his resilience and preparation. Not only did he return, but he continued to excel at the highest level on offense and defense. He shows us that setbacks don't have to be the end of the story; They can serve as an opportunity to write a new chapter. True leadership is about staying ready, learning during downtime, and returning stronger. What recent setback could become a setup for your next breakthrough?
5. Be Willing to Cry Sometimes
The most touching aspect of watching Travis's speech was his willingness to show emotion. "I'm going to cry for you," he said as tears of joy and gratitude flowed. In a world where men, particularly Black men, are often pressured to be stoic and keep the "cool pose," Travis's vulnerability was a powerful reminder of the strength found in authenticity and how it can connect us to others and build trust. When was the last time you let yourself to be vulnerable and express your truth?

6. Stay True to You and Own Your Journey
Finally, Travis reflected on his unconventional path to that moment. From his groundbreaking decision to attend an HBCU and play for Jackson State to transferring to Colorado to challenge himself on a bigger stage, he shows his willingness to stay true to himself and forge his own path, even when it's risky. Leaders must be willing to be authentic and take bold steps, knowing that the journey matters as much as the destination. Where in your life or career could you take a step that feels bold and risky but also true to your purpose?

2 个月This is great Robert Dortch, Jr. Thank you for sharing your insight on Travis Hunter's great achievement and recognition. For me, it's number 3. My saying on it is this: "What you do in the dark gets revealed in the light" It's another way to say number 3; put in the work. What you do in the dark is the work. It's what you do when no one is watching. It gets revealed in the light. Travis Hunter is recognized on one of the brightest stages because of all the work he put in to be ready for the light. To answer your question about which lesson resonates the most; for me it's number 3.
