Travelling with generative AI

I have been travelling extensively since when I was 16. My first trip was in 1986 in Paris and since then for almost 40 years I organised trips in all the continents, typically backpacking in camping, hostels (recently more hotels). I organised trips in Namibia, South Africa, Peru', Vietnam, Lapland, Jordan, Turkey, Greece, Morocco, Australia ... and many others

Every trip requested lot of study. What to do, where to go, where to sleep and where to eat? In the beginning I used lot of guides (Routard, Lonely Planet, ...) In the second phase lot of web sites (TripAdvisor, Forums and google), this year for the first time I used Generative AI.

I first booked flights to Oman, rented 4WD car and decided which activities I didn't want to miss

  • Scuba Diving & Camping in Al Dimaniyat Island
  • Trekking in Jabal Akhdar
  • Visit to ruins and forts in Nizwa
  • Camping in the desert with Bedouins enjoying sunrise and sunset on the dune
  • Visit & canyoning in Wadi Shab
  • Arabic horse riding on the beach near Muscat

I booked some of the activities and booked some camping/hotels.

Once the important things were planned I gave all the information to ChatGPT asking to prepare a detailed plan, suggesting what to do in between, where to eat, where to sleep. The result I got was really impressive. I got a perfect plan with exact timetable, telling me when to wake up, where to stop, even where to pit stop at the gas station based on the model of car I booked.

The level of accuracy and the hints I received were really detailed, with lot of suggestions that most probably I would have missed. Once I was travelling last week, I realised that all the information I received were extremely accurate. Right time to set wake up call, right amount of time booked for visiting a Mosque or a Ruin. Every detail was extremely accurate.

We are now entering in a new era for traveller. Much easier to get information and to aggregate all the info in a perfect plan. Easy to change the plan, and to adapt to own needs.

The only question I have is when different LLM will start to give advice based on 'paid advertisement'. For the time being the business model is still to be defined, and the result was the best for me as a traveller. When LLM will start prioritizing the information based on the best offers?

I did the same before my last family trip "on the road" in USA western National Parks. I had a general Plan in mind, with stops and what to see or view, and chatGTP helped a lot to refine and consolidate that Plan. But the best part was still fortunately under my controll: improvise and change the itinerary a little, based on how We felt each day. Fantasy, Improvisation , Discovery and Adventure. Ultimately the most beautiful part of a journey

I tried to do it last summer for my trip to Japan but, somehow, I was not completely satisfied with the result. I used it more as a first draft that I then enriched. Probably something missing in my prompts at that time. Will try again for my next trip to Armenia later this year. I might ask you for some tips ??
