Traveler Tips in Nepal
Do not trek alone. There have been numerous disappearances of solo trekkers in recent years. Always hire a guide/ Porter with registered trekking company or trek with other people. This applies to everyone but especially women that are traveling single – they seem to more vulnerable. Always communicate your travel plans to your next of kin or consult with (Alpine Asian Treks and Expedition P Ltd) agency.
Food safety - Avoid water that is not bottled or boiled. Avoid raw vegetables and pre-cut fruit as much as possible.
Drinking water in trekking: always drink bottle water or properly boiled water.
Do not give money to beggars in the street. Even though they look pitiful, your giving away of money encourages them only to beg for more. If you really care, support one of many charity (registered organizations working) in Nepal. Beware of beggar with child in Thamel. They will ask to buy food for child and immediately you left them they will go to the shop and refund back and get money.
Do Not accept Indian Rupee note of 500 and 1000: Indian government ban the 500 and 1000 rupee note in Nepal. Please do not buy or use of them. They are considered illegal.
Do not touch someone’s head or sit showing the bottom of your feet towards them. It is considered rude.
Be aware of appointment/ meeting: Except tourism workers, do not except to happen right on time. You must make double sure to happen that in time. Have time buffer as much as you can between your major plans and activities, especially if you have a hard stop date that you need to fly out by.
Do not make tight schedule in the last day: Always be alert/aware of “Bandhs” (Strikes – where no transportation is allowed) as they can alter all your travel plans substantially.
Do not assume that “ganja” (marijuana) is legal in Nepal. It is not. You can get in trouble for picking it and carrying it for consumption purpose.
Make sure that they understand you: except tourism workers, please double check that they understand you properly. You try to explain in different ways to make sure. Nepalese culturally say yes even they don’t some time.
Stay away from dance bars. These are tourist traps where they scam you on buying alcohol and food at much inflated prices. Some of these places have a history of intimidation and violence.
Be notice with Power cuts: There are daily scheduled power outages. Have a flashlight handy all the times.
Power plug: Bring a universal plug and voltage adapter kit for your Electronics. Nepal uses 220V.
Entrance to the temple and monasteries: There are fixed entrance fee to most of the temple and monasteries in Katmandu and in Pokhara.
Always have some tissue paper and hand sanitizer with you at all times – and note that some of the toilets may require squatting.
Insist for a Running Meter in the Taxi. After 10 PM you do pay double of the meter fare however – that’s the commonly accepted norm.
Be aware of Monkey: Avoid displaying food around monkeys around temples, as they are used to snatching it.
Support the NON-Plastic Initiative: please limit your use of plastic items, and help make Nepal a better place.
Insured guide and porter: Make sure that your guide and trekking porter have insurance and proper cloth to go to the mountain.
Ask before take picture: Everyone like nice and strange picture. Before taking pictures of the person or in the temple, ask for permission.
Wearing cloth: wear gentle and long trouser and shirts/ T shirts. Do not show your body which is not polite to Nepalese society.
Price in the mountain: do not bargain for food and accommodation in the mountain. The price is fixed by “Local Lodge Management Committee”. Pay fair price
