Travelers show commitment to environmental protection

According to Island Routes Caribbean Adventures, Caribbean destinations have seen an increase in the number of visitors purchasing eco-tours and environmentally focused experiences within the last few months, compared with the same period in 2016.

The company, which sells 500 unique experiences across the Caribbean region, said it has seen close to a 15% increase in the number of travelers who are actively choosing eco-immersive tours like kayaking and river tubing, and conservation experiences like its turtle release program. These increases are not limited to Jamaica, where the company is headquartered; it has also noticed increases across Antigua, Grenada, Aruba, and the Dominican Republic amongst other destinations.

“Island Routes was founded from a deep-rooted appreciation for the natural world, and a desire to share the natural beauty of the Caribbean, so it’s truly amazing to see travelers responding. I know first-hand that tough choices have to be made when considering what’s best for operations and what’s best for the environment, sometimes the right decision comes at a higher cost, but in the long run we know that these decisions will be the right ones,” commented Adam Stewart, CD, Chief Executive Officer, Island Routes. “Island Routes will continue to seek out incredible experiences that protect the environment and help educate visitors about the Caribbean’s eco-system. We’re going to be here for years to come, so it’s our job to take action now.”

Hopefully Caribbean visitors are setting a trend for the industry as a whole. Island Routes currently offers more than 100 environmentally-focused tours across the region and plans to continue this push into 2018 and beyond. The company welcomes the continued support from its North American and international visitors for the health and support of the environment in the Caribbean and beyond.

Great article and well written. It is encouraging to hear about people and companies doing the right thing. It would be great to see more news like this, as well as about any Sandals' solar PV or wind renewable energy projects which would go a long way in reducing the dependence on diesel generators, especially since the Caribbean is such a renewable resource rich area of the world.
