South Africa Tops African Travel and Tourism Development Index for 2024

South Africa has secured the top spot among African countries in the Travel and Tourism Development Index 2024, ranking 55th out of 119 countries globally. This notable achievement underscores the country's leadership in the travel and tourism economy on the continent.

The Government Communication and Information System (GCIS), on behalf of the Department of Tourism, announced that South Africa's improved ranking—up by seven positions from the previous assessment—highlights the nation's strength in several key areas, including price competitiveness, ICT readiness, natural resources, and socio-economic impacts.

Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille expressed her satisfaction with the ranking, attributing the success to the government's dedication to fostering the tourism sector through strategic partnerships with the private sector. "This achievement reflects our commitment to developing the tourism sector, enhancing our competitive edge, and leveraging our rich natural and cultural resources," de Lille stated.

The report emphasizes South Africa's robust performance in various categories, reinforcing its status as a premier travel destination in Africa.

Rwanda Rises to 2nd Most Popular Conference Destination in Africa

Rwanda has ascended to the second spot as Africa’s most popular destination for association conferences, according to the latest International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) rankings. Previously holding the third position since 2016, Rwanda's rise reflects its growing prominence in the meetings, incentives, conferences, and events (MICE) industry. This achievement highlights Rwanda's increasing capacity to host significant international gatherings, a fact underscored by the Rwanda Convention Bureau (RCB)and reported by www.newtimes.co.rw

Janet Karemera, CEO of RCB, expressed pride in the recognition, noting that it underscores Rwanda’s commitment to excellence in hosting international events. The number of delegates attending conferences in Rwanda jumped from 35,000 in 2022 to 65,000 in 2023, contributing over $95 million to the economy, which marks a 48% increase from the previous year. This MICE tourism revenue represents 15% of Rwanda's total tourism revenue for 2023 as reported by www.newtimes.co.rw .

Kigali, the capital of Rwanda, has been pivotal in this success, consistently hosting high-profile events such as the 73rd FIFA Congress, the World Tourism & Travel Council Summit 2023, and the Women Deliver 2023. The RCB's annual report reveals that 2023 was a record-breaking year with 160 events generating $95 million. Looking forward, Rwanda has more than 90 events confirmed for 2024 and projections suggest that successful bids for 45 additional events could bring in another $32 million in the coming years.
