Travel Security-Tips for Safety Abroad

Travel Safety and Security for the International Traveler

by Steve Cocco, President,?Security Strategies Today

The summer travel season is upon us and with that, tourists are gearing up for vacations at destinations both near and far.?According to recent data provided by US airlines, bookings for the summer season are strong, far exceeding those of last year and approaching levels not seen since pre-pandemic 2019.?With most COVID-19 restrictions lifted, airlines, cruise lines, hotels and restaurants, as well as other travel-related services, are hoping to cash-in on what is expected to be a banner year.

????????So, get ready to book your tickets before the cheapest rates are sold out, pack your sunscreen and make sure your passport is current.?But while you’re at it, take the time to tick the boxes on safety and security measures and do your utmost to avoid an unpleasant situation or chain of events while travelling.?You are responsible for your own safety and security is your job, primarily.?Know before your go and be prepared!

????????Here are few suggestions to bear in mind that might help you to avoid unpleasant situations while travelling overseas.?Though we have not provided country-specific advice in this article, check on-line for detailed information regarding the countries you plan on visiting.?

?????Your foreign ministry is a good place to start when looking for reliable, travel-related safety information.?The UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office?https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice? provides advice on country conditions, crime, health matters and evacuations, among other topics.?The US State Department site?www.state.gov ?is also quite comprehensive and provides the contact address and phone numbers for all US embassies and consulates.

- When travelling internationally, make a photocopy of your passport and carry it separately.?In addition, carry all medications in their original containers.?Certain classes of medications are prohibited in particular countries, so check-on line for the latest regulations.
- Emergency health situations, whether an illness or injury, unfortunately do occur during travel.?Take a few moments to research the medical care in the regions or countries you will visit.?Understand the level of care in the treatment that can be provided as well as the protocol and cost of a medical evacuation (“medivac”) to a third country.
- Be careful when taking photos.?Out of respect, do not photograph people who are in distress or homeless.?In addition, avoid photographing military installations, soldiers, police officers or government buildings-you may draw unwanted scrutiny.
????????
- Be aware that certain clothing may be considered inappropriate in some countries, so dress according to local custom and law.?In Muslim countries, conservative dress on women is expected.?Also, men in general should refrain from wearing shorts or swim trunks unless engaged in exercise or at a beach or pool.?Trousers are the standard dress for men on the street.
- Rules regarding drugs and alcohol vary from country to country.?Alcohol is not permitted in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait or Iran.?Use or possession of illegal drugs, even marijuana, is severely punished in many countries.?Penalties for drug trafficking may be quite harsh and include imprisonment or even death, such as in Singapore, Saudi Arabia and Iran.
- In highly trafficked tourist areas, such as around famous ruins, museums, parks, restaurants or other locations known to attract crowds, pickpocketing and theft are common.?Do not leave your belongings unattended.?Keep money, passport and car keys in your front pocket.?Do not leave a purse or rucksack hanging on the back of a chair at a bar or café-it can be stolen in a flash and you will not notice it until it is gone.?Do not leave valuables in your vehicle.

Taking a few easy steps and ensuring compliance with basic safety and security protocols may save you a good amount of distress and money while travelling.?Remember that we can provide you with a detailed, personalized travel safety and threat assessment as well or provide you with information about any of our services at?www.securitystrategiestoday.com
