Travel from your sofa during Lockdown!

In this strange time of Lockdown - probably (hopefully) the only time in our lifetime we will be in this situation - and as an award-winning personal travel consultant I thought .....what can I do to help people? To get them travelling even whilst we can't? To prepare for when we unlock again - which surely cannot be far away!

Believe me when I say that the need for a holiday has never been more relevant. Itchy feet are prominent, and I can’t wait to start planning my next getaway - and yours! But for now, I’ve rounded up the best ways that we can travel to our favourite destinations from the comfort of our own homes.

Travel Through Virtual Technology

To help keep the travel dream alive, a lot of destinations are setting up virtual ways to visit their incredible sights and attractions. From an interactive ride on the tallest roller coaster in Orlando to watching live artist home sessions in Nashville, it’s never been easier to check out your favourite hot spots. You can even live stream from Canada where the Northern Lights have been seen frequently recently and take part in a bucket-list experience in your own home. You’ll even find a lot of zoo’s are doing live streams, where you can learn all about their incredible animals. One of my favourites are these live Wild Earth Safaris where, twice a day, you can travel on a real safari through the South Africa Bush! Or how about travelling by train - check out these Iconic Train Journeys for some amazing places to visit in Lockdown. And who wouldn't want to visit the incredible Necker Island  or some of these incredible odd beaches? Finally check out All of Australia where there are the most amazing set of videos done just last week which guide you through so many amazing experiences in Australia.

Travel Through Food!

Remember those amazing tacos you had? Or that awesome paella from that trip back in 2015? Why not try to recreate your favourites foods from destinations across the world. Being transported around the world as you enjoy the cuisine from the places you love the most. It gives you plenty of time to practice and perfect it! Why not even facetime your friends or family and all make something from a different country? Have themed evenings - we've done Mexican, Greek, Italian, Indian - where will you go next? To get you thinking about different options - how about Brussels Sprouts Tacos from Scottsdale - take a listen to our fabulous Scottsdale Podcast to learn more!! They sound amazing - globally renowned!

Google Earth

So, it might not be quite the same, but why not visit your favourite destinations on Google Earth? Relive that moment from that epic family holiday you took, or the awesome backpacking adventure you went on. We’ve all searched our own houses on Google Earth (why is it we all do that?!), so instead search for that hidden beach spot you found in Greece. Even better, why not get the kids involved and make it a geography lesson! You can also try out geoguessr - a fab game where you have to guess where you are in the world online from your screen by exploring. Great fun with the kids

Get Your Read On

A good book is a cure for most things, so grab a travel-inspired piece and settle down for the day in a cosy corner in your home. From The Good Girls Guide To Getting Lost to The Beach or even Land Of Lost Borders: A Journey On The Silk Road, a book can be just the thing to help feel your escapism need and bring some inspiration to your next travel destination. You could even set up a virtual book club with family or friends and discuss it over a video call; not only is it educational but it helps you stay connected too. Here are some of my top reads to take a look at:

  • 1,000 Places to See Before You Die: The World as You’ve Never Seen It Before, by Patricia Schultz
  • The Frozen River: Seeking Silence in the Himalaya, by James Crowden -Harper Collins
  • Hidden Places, by Sarah Baxter : White Lion Publishing

Travel Shows

With a bit more time on our hands, it has never been better to catch up on the travel-inspired documentaries. Why not check out the recent Race Across the World if you didn't catch it and witness couples try to get certain points in the world without flying, making sure to hit checkpoints along the way. Or why not check in with the nation’s treasure and binge watch a David Attenborough series? Pedal the World sees Felix Starck on an 18,000km bicycle journey across 22 countries, or Walking with Elephants  with Levison Wood - my personal ongoing watch favourite right now.

And if that doesn’t quite do it for you, grab the tent and get camping in the garden! It’s a hard time right now, but with a bit of creativity and imagination, you can bring the world to your home.

If this inspires you - start writing your travel bucket list, and when you are ready to start planning your next getaway, get in touch with your Personal Travel Consultant today!

You can’t beat a bit of escapism. Google earth is great for revisiting old memories. It’s amazing how places seem to change so quickly though or maybe it was that it was such along time ago I visited!

Absolutly love this some great advice here
