THE TRAP OF OVERTHINKING
Tara was sitting at the window of her room with tears in her eyes. She was upset that her best friend didn't pick up her call when she needs her the most. She was upset with her parents as they refused her to go for the summer vacation trip to Nainital. She was upset that no one loves her and maybe her best friend has also got new friends, as their sections are separated. She thought maybe she should also stop giving much attention to her. Also she decided to not talk even to her parents as they also don't understand her.
In daily lives we go through numerous situations which make us to think beyond what is actually needed. This is what we call as Overthinking. Tara thought that her friend no longer care for her, but she forgot that maybe her friend was in tuition or sleeping or her phone was silent.
The wires of her mind were mingled as she was already angry with her parents and thought they don't love her and now her best friend also have other priorities in life. Sometimes we think about a situation too much that it affects us emotionally , psychologically and physically. Tara cried whole night and didn't even had her last night dinner. When she woke up next morning she was having a severe headache because of which she was not even able to go to the school.
Toxic habit- Overthinking
Call it overthinking, obsessing, brooding or call it the official term 'rumination'.
Rumination is thinking (and thinking and thinking) about something upsetting, but in a passive way, without actually taking action.
We all know ' khaali dimaag shaitaan ka ghar'.It is always said that keep yourself busy to avoid negative thoughts.
Thinking is a wheel that rotates 24*7 , and many a times our thinking becomes overthinking. There is a traffic jam in our mind causing chaos and confusion. And whenever we overthink there are more chances of perceiving things negatively.
This happens because:
1.we are more likely to blame ourselves/ others to an extreme level.
2. Its leads to feeling of anger/ aggression.
3.Our anxiety level increases.
Three dangers of being an over thinker:
1) It disturbs your sleep: Whenever we indulge in overthinking our sleep is affected. Deprivation of sleep affects other daily life routines. We are more likely to lose our concentration when we are working or studying because our mind is stuck on a specific thought.
2) It increases chances of mental illness :A 2013 study published in the journal of Abnormal psychology reports dwelling on your shortcomings, mistakes, and problems increases your risk of mental health problems.
3) It interferes with problem solving: It will cause you to dwell on the problem rather than look for solutions.
Reasons for overthinking.
1) Lack of confidence
2)second guessing yourself
3) You want to be perfect
4) Overthinking is just a habit
How to stop overthinking and start living.
1) Get used to not having answers: Nobody is used to know all the answers in life. Some mysteries and unknowns are not too bad!
2) Take small steps: Instead of doing everything in one go, take small steps and pick a pace that suits you.
3) Don't be afraid to jump: Don't be afraid of your failures. Give yourself a chance to take risks, because you definitely deserve it.
