Transportation Providers Fraud, Waste, and Abuse

Transportation Providers Fraud, Waste, and Abuse

Fraud, waste, and abuse among transportation providers are becoming serious issues, as noted in recent activity in New York State. Attorney General Letitia James recently announced new measures to curtail Medicaid fraud by transportation companies (see press release here:?https://ag.ny.gov/press-release/2025/attorney-general-james-puts-medical-transportation-industry-notice-announces-new).

These issues pose significant challenges for individual organizations and the entire healthcare transportation industry.

MediDrive is committed to addressing these issues head-on and fostering transparency, accountability, and trust.

The Problem Fraudulent practices such as drivers marking trips as completed when they are not, misreporting mileage, or submitting false documentation are unfortunately not isolated incidents. Examples include:

  • A driver reporting a completed trip without ever picking up the patient.
  • Submitting inflated mileage for reimbursement far beyond the actual distance traveled.
  • Creating fictitious trips to claim payment for services that were never provided.
  • A driver drops off at a destination that is not approved for reimbursement and reports a different drop-off destination.

A recent case highlights the scale of the problem: Twenty defendants were arrested in a $5 million Medicaid transportation fraud scheme, where false claims and non-existent trips were billed to the system. Such examples underline the need for comprehensive action to combat these fraudulent practices.

These actions harm everyone involved, including patients, transportation providers, and healthcare payers.

The Impact

  1. Financial Losses: Fraudulent claims drive up costs for healthcare systems and insurers, reducing resources that could be allocated to legitimate needs.
  2. Erosion of Trust: Patients and healthcare providers lose confidence in transportation services, affecting relationships and collaboration.
  3. Access to Care: When resources are misused, it limits access for patients who genuinely rely on transportation for their healthcare needs.
  4. Reputational Damage: Widespread fraud impacts the entire industry's reputation, making it harder for honest providers to thrive.

Addressing the Challenge Solving the problem of fraud, waste, and abuse requires a united industry effort:

  • Technology Integration: Implementing tracking and reporting systems to ensure accuracy and transparency.
  • Geofencing: Establishing a virtual "perimeter" or "fence" around a given geographic areas to maintain boundaries for authorized pick-ups and drop-offs in only areas that are sanctioned.
  • Provider Training: Establishing clear guidelines and best practices to prevent accidental errors and intentional misuse.
  • Accountability Measures: Regular audits and robust checks to deter fraudulent behavior.
  • Collaboration Across the Industry: Sharing insights, data, and strategies to combat fraud collectively.

This is not a challenge that any one organization can solve alone. At MediDrive, we have developed solutions tailored to these problems. Contact us to learn how we can help you tackle fraud, waste, and abuse effectively.
