A simple thought about the future of freight forwarding and complex logistics since I have been around for a while.

I've gone from telex to ChatGPT, a little bit of industry evolution and revolution has occurred, more is on the way...

In the coming months and years the topic of actual individual intelligence versus artificial intelligence #ai will pop. I'm cheering for the individual!!

#ai is quietly being used to develop better systems, output, productivity and in the end a more automated environment. Being used to communicate; to drive productivity and efficiency.

All nice and good but at what "people" cost?

We have already seen this in the consumer & retail space (automated tellers which I do love) and now this process is slowly being implemented with some challenges in different areas such as automated ports, warehouses and operational systems with varying levels of success and struggle.

System interface between web based apps and users of course have been around for a while, with data and algorithms now being the new go-to source to reduce cost, eliminate and streamline efficiency.

Look no further than 1-800, Uber-Eats or your online banking - disruption is everywhere around us but do we need to think before we click?

What place is all this clicking taking us to - a nice vacation via Expedia I think!?

After all, we humans are a pretty puzzling, inefficient & unmanageable species - we need to speed it & clean it up a bit!!

For those fortunate enough to grasp these impending system changes on the horizon, the future will be one of data and automation in our supply chain & transportation sector as well.

Interdependence of client to service provider & system.

A colleague of mine is a firm believer in #data and we do have lively discussions about it's relevance in our freight forwarding world but in the end data does not lie which is the big driver behind it's extreme validity and purpose.

Client interaction, data and actions will dictate what and when things are done across the simplified sector of freight forwarding, customs clearance and moving consumer commodities from point A to point B if all data is correct of course.

Click, click, click and it's dispatched for pick up, booked, reported, sailing, arrived, cleared and delivered - we are almost at this stage & I believe we will be here in no time with clean data and systems with the help of #ai

The world of #amazon prime across the freight forwarding sector is already playing out with new forces competing as industry disruptors - conventional freight forwarders know who they are.

I'm not saying it's a bad thing, I'm saying there is a need for a stronger call to action for individual intelligence & industry experience to drive this forward empathetically.

Where it gets interesting is in the world of more complex logistics; where change is constant, where individual intelligence, ideation, problem solving and JIT pivoting rules the day.

In this world every day is different and will continue to be different meaning an automated or #ai solution might not be the best predictor of success. It's not click and book, it's click and try to figure out timelines, availability, restrictions and carrier choice & about another 20 variables!

The beauty of an individual intelligence solution driven by actual experience, market knowledge and history are critical to develop solutions & are key in driving successful results in our #projectlogistics world fortunately.

The world is literally changing before our eyes; are we watching?

Great read. Being a data based tool, AI must first gather the correct data and interpret it appropriately. I believe you're right that when there are many different variables, it is difficult to weigh those variables appropriately and come to a conclusion without abstract, human thought.

Good points Mike. As long as the end payer continues to demand lowest cost, companies are going to be compelled to develop cost effective support tools. AI first level help support, not human support is one area of cost that automation is being used to reduce overhead. Process automation for pricing, booking & documentation is another area that the human cost is being reduced in response to the demand of the end payer. They don’t want to pay for humans to do the work that machines can do. Unless it’s their job of course, then it’s about value created and not cost of labour.
