Transport Ticketing Global 2024 conference was great fun and very useful for Osmodal Group this year and we saw a range of innovation, challenges, and opportunities within the transport ticketing ecosystem. These were our thoughts into what some of the hot topics could be for the coming year:

Adoption of Open Loop and EMV Solutions: The gradual transition towards open loop systems and EMV technology is reshaping fare payments, offering better convenience and access. However, this transition is not without challenges, particularly the risk to revenue. We wonder what innovative measures can be devised to protect revenue without detracting from the user experience.

Importance of Cybersecurity: As ticketing systems evolve digitally, the need for cybersecurity has never been more pronounced. Balancing security protocols with user privacy presents a complex challenge for transport operators and ticketing system providers.

Advancements in ABT: Account-Based Ticketing could herald a transformative era for public transport. Yet, articulating and demonstrating its comprehensive benefits seems to be an obstacle. Identifying ways to quantify and communicate the value of ABT to stakeholders is crucial, especially when they are not immediately apparent.

Commitment to Sustainability and Accessibility: Digital ticketing's potential to drive sustainability and enhance accessibility was a notable theme at the conference. The industry faces the task of designing digital ticketing platforms that not only bridge the access gap for under-banked users but also actively support the sustainability ambitions of public transport systems.

Value of International Collaboration: The conference underscored the significance of international collaboration, sharing best practices, and learning from diverse experiences to evolve transport ticketing systems. Crafting ways to encourage more international cooperation is essential. It’s good to see Transport Ticketing North America as another step down this path.
