Innovate UK Business Connect Innovation Exchange Challenges
Innovation Exchange Challenge: Implementing a programme of accessible and sustainable MaaS journey planning tools in Scotland. Closes 11 August 2024.
Tactran and SEStran (South East of Scotland Transport Partnership) are seeking digital solutions for a new Mobility-as-a-Service platform for Central and South East Scotland on web and in-app. Solutions should promote a reduction in car use, help non-car owners to use multi-modal travel options, and enable people with mobility difficulties to navigate the transport network. This is part of an Innovation Exchange Challenge offering a contract with the challenge owners to deploy the solution across a population area of +2 million. The successful applicant will also receive support from Innovate UK Business Connect , support to develop a prototype or pilot, and investment introductions if required. Find out more.
UK Innovation Grants, Loans, and Support
AI Grant Funding: Supply Chain Demonstrator. Closes 21 August 2024.
As part of of the Innovate UK BridgeAI programme, UK organisations can apply for grant funding of £1.9-2 million for AI demonstrator projects that will benefit efficiency in supply chains and increase productivity. Projects must be late stage R&D and demonstrate benefits for at least two of the BridgeAI target sectors: transport, logistics & warehousing, agriculture & food processing, and construction. Projects must include a consortium of SME and large organisations from at least two of the three key target sectors. Find out more.
Faraday Battery Challenge Investment Readiness Programme 2024. Closes 22 August 2024.
15 SMEs will be selected by Innovate UK Business Connect to participate in the Faraday Battery Challenge Investment Readiness Programme, which provides a suite of support to hone your investment pitch, give you a better understanding of the funding landscape, and give you more confidence in delivering a compelling commercial story. The programme includes a 12-week programme of workshops to led by investment experts , one-to-one mentoring sessions, and a live showcase event pitching to investors active in the battery systems sector. 90% of companies who have previously participated in the programme have gone on to achieve positive outcomes and/or raise additional capital. Innovate UK Innovation Loans Future Economy: Round 16. Closes 28 August 2024.
UK registered SMEs can apply for loans of between £100,000 to £2 million per project for highly innovative late-stage research and development projects with strong commercial potential to significantly improve the UK economy, with a focus on one or more of three themes: net-zero, health and wellbeing, and next generation digital technologies (including advanced materials and manufacturing, robotics, artificial intelligence digital and advanced computing, and electronics, photonics and quantum technologies). Eureka Collaborative R&D: Eurostars 3 Call 7. Closes 12 September 2024.
UK-registered organisations can apply for up to €360,000 per project for collaborative research in partnership with organisations from participating Eurostars countries. This competition is open to high market potential projects in all sectors that develop innovative products, technology-based applications, or technology-based services. Find out more.
Station Innovation Zone – Year Three. Closes 24 September 2024.
This competition aims to reduce showcase rail technology and craft a 'station of the future' that embodies local identity, fosters inclusivity, and ensures seamless transit for all. Funded by Innovate UK , Network Rail and the Connected Places Catapult will award 8 SMEs up to £4k each to develop proposed 2-month trial plans in Phase 1, before awarding up to £45k to each for Phase 2 demonstrations over a six-month period at Bristol Temple Meads. All successful applicants will also receive business development and technical trial support and the opportunity to showcase their technology at relevant industry events. Find out more.
Innovate UK Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTP): 2024 to 2025 Round 3. Closes 25 September 2024.
The Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) programme allows UK registered businesses or not-for-profit organisations to partner with a UK higher education (HE) or further education (FE) institution, research and technology organisation (RTO), or Catapult to benefit from the latest academic thinking to deliver a specific, strategic innovation project. Note: This is a rolling programme, the next round of Knowledge Transfer Partnerships will open on 30 September 2024 and close on 4 December 2024. Find out more.
Innovate UK Smart Grants: July 2024. Closes 23 October 2024.
UK registered organisations can apply for £100k to £1 million per project for game-changing R&D that can significantly impact the UK economy. Proposals must be business focused and show deliverable, realistic, adequately resourced plans to achieve return on investment, growth, and market share following project completion. Find out more.
SMART: SCOTLAND grants for feasibility studies for SMEs. Rolling applications.
Scottish SMEs can apply for grants of up to £100k for feasibility studies for high-risk, highly ambitious R&D projects. SMART supports Scottish Enterprise 's priority areas for economic transformation to create an internationally competitive energy transition industry, scale the impact of Scotland’s innovation strengths into high-growth future industries, and drive capital investment to deliver a step-change in productivity. ESA Space4Rail. Rolling applications.
This European Space Agency - ESA aims to support the exploitation of space-based assets (satellite navigation, satellite communications and/or Earth observation) in innovative and sustainable applications/services that are related to future control, command and signalling applications of the European Rail system; or improve the performance and attractiveness of the railway, both for railway undertakings and end users. Projects will be feasibility studies and can apply for up to €500k per project. Find out more.
International Collaboration and Funding
??LAST CHANCE - DEADLINE EXTENDED?? Global Incubator Programme: India - Urban Systems. Closes 2 August 2024.
The Innovate UK Global Incubator Programme will select up to 10 innovative companies in the Urban Systems sector to join this programme delivered in partnership with T-Hub innovation campus and ecosystem in Hyderabad. Applications to develop solutions to challenges that cities are facing in their transition to a just and sustainable net zero are welcomed, such as electrification for transport, heating & cooling and grid management; clean technologies that address sustainable resource management; and solutions to drive uptake of sustainable behaviour. Innovate UK Global Business Innovation Programme
The Innovate UK Global Business Innovation Programme (GBIP) helps UK businesses to grow and scale on a global stage through R&D and innovation collaboration and partnership. GBIP projects consists of a get ready preparation phase in the UK, a residential visit to the partner country, an exploitation workshop, and support from an Innovate UK innovation and growth specialist to help your business maximise the opportunities, including developing innovation projects with partners in the region. Innovate UK will fund and organise flights, accommodation, in-market travel, and conference fees for successful applicants.
Europe Quantum Technology CR&D 2024. Closes 28 August 2024.
UK registered businesses can apply for up to £600k for quantum research and innovation, collaborating with at least one EU member state organisation. Projects will facilitate collaboration between UK and international organisations to accelerate quantum technology development and remove technological and market barriers to successful commercialisation and adoption. Projects should focus on quantum sensing; industrial products, processes, or services; or technologies for scaling quantum compute. Find out more.
UK-Singapore Collaborative R&D 2024. Closes 28 August 2024.
UK registered businesses can apply for grant funding of up to £750k for projects to develop innovative proposals with Singapore businesses. UK partners must collaborate with at least one non-linked Singapore registered business applying under the equivalent Enterprise Singapore programme, and projects should focus on theme areas including advanced manufacturing and materials, mobility and transport, and/or cybersecurity. Innovate UK offers travel support for companies to attend consortia building events in Europe. Travel awards support companies to expand their networks across Europe and make an impact in collaborative international research and development projects through programmes such as Horizon Europe and Eureka. Access to and Investment In Research Infrastructure and Support
Pre-announcement: UKRI Cross Research Council Responsive Mode Pilot Scheme: Round 2. Opens 2 September 2024, closes 18 November 2024.
UK research organisations can apply for up to £1.2 million for for breakthrough or disruptive interdisciplinary ideas that transcend, combine or significantly span disciplines that are not routinely funded through existing UK Research and Innovation responsive mode schemes. Awards will be potentially transformative for the participating disciplines or lead to the creation of new disciplines. Find out more.

Opportunities for Academia and Research Organisations
UK-Canada Quantum for Science Research Collaborations. Closes 28 August 2024.
UK research organisations can apply for up to £500k of funding for projects that collaborate with Canadian researchers to develop quantum sensors and detectors for fundamental and applied science or quantum communications including ground and space-based applications. Projects will last up to two years and conclude by March 2027. Find out more.
Core Research Challenges in Digital Twinning for Crisis Resilience. Closes 5 September 2024.
UK Research Organisations can apply for EPSRC funding to lead an interdisciplinary research programme in digital twinning focused on improving government crisis response and resilience. The programme will address identified digital twinning research challenge, develop a proof-of-concept digital twin for crisis response and resilience with relevance to all transport essential services and their interface with other interconnected critical national infrastructure sectors, and be delivered in close collaboration with key UK policy stakeholders. The full economic cost (FEC) of your project can be up to £4.375m, of which UK Research and Innovation will fund 80% of the FEC. Find out more.

UK research organisations can apply for up to £400k to address key urban challenges facing cities in the transition to a more sustainable economy. UK projects will address the 15-minute city themes of sustainable urban mobility, people-centred urban planning, and/or smart logistics. Early to mid-career materials researchers can apply for up to £312k in support funding to further their research through enhancing available expertise, broaden their research horizons or help translate research into applications. Research should focus on identifying alternative materials and manufacturing technologies to deliver more sustainable options, developing and optimising materials with electronic properties for quantum technologies, and/or engineering to accelerate the creation/utilisation of materials in an environmentally sustainable and socially responsible way to support net zero aims. Design Exchange Partnerships: Design the Green Transition Round Three. Closes 12 September 2024.
Apply for up to £125k of grant funding to develop design-led solutions around the theme of more-than-human design. More-than-human design refers to the idea of designing for impact beyond humans. Broad interpretations of the theme are welcomed, including but not limited to areas such as materials, health and wellbeing, urban environments, and technology and artificial intelligence (AI). Projects must involve an early career arts and humanities design research associate (including doctoral candidates), at least one academic supervisor as project lead, and at least one non-academic organisation with a challenge relevant to the overarching theme of Design the Green Transition. Royal Society Entrepreneur in Residence scheme 2024. Closes 18 September 2024.
The Royal Society aims to increase the knowledge and awareness in universities of cutting edge industrial science, research and innovation, and provides opportunities for enthusiastic and experienced industrial scientists and entrepreneurs to spend one day a week at a university developing a bespoke project exposing staff and students to state-of-the-art industrial R&D, provide support and expert advice to promote innovation and the translation of research by universities, and grow understanding of entrepreneurship. Organisations can apply for a share of £750k to support outreach projects that will contribute to the Generation Aviation programme.
