Transparency > Honesty

Transparency > Honesty

In sales and marketing, there is an ever-growing trend to advertise misleading promotions and/or discounts. Oftentimes, these promotions come across as “too good to be true” and unfortunately, usually they are. Usually, the promotion is true but not transparent on the full meaning or consequences of “taking the bait.”

As the buyer, we are looking for the “catch” and usually have to read the small print. If the catch is not in the small print, we later figure out why the discount was given to us down the road. Typically, it’s to get our contact information or to get us to swim in a marketing funnel. Unfortunately, there is usually always an ulterior motive to a discount or a promotion.

So, is it dishonest or not transparent?

Promotions are tactfully written and rarely dishonest. As we dig deeper, we can see the honesty in the word track or we find the small text at the bottom of the promotion with the “catch” disclaimer tactfully placed. This leads me to my main point:

Transparency is greater than Honesty.

You can be honest, but not transparent. You can be honest, but it can be misleading. The real act of character is being honest and transparent. It is going the extra mile to make sure that your buyer, employee, 1099, client, stakeholder, etc. fully understands what they are signing up for or partaking in. Transparency is being honest, but then going the extra mile to explain the “catch”, the funnel, or the motive for the promotion.
