TransNamib Transports NamPower Coal
TransNamib is expected to move a total of 30,000 Metric Tons of coal for NamPower by the end of October 2019. Since July 2019, this commodity has been loaded and transported from Walvis Bay to Windhoek by Rail.
This comes after the Walvis Bay Bulk Terminal (WBBT) was awarded the tender to supply coal to NamPower and Meatco, respectively. WWBT is a freight logistics and shipping service provider based in Walvis Bay and the company has a long history of doing business with TransNamib.
To date, out of the 30,000 Metric Tons of coal, Transnamib has successfully moved about 15,500MT for NamPower and is expected to finalize this movement by the 31st of October 2019 or the onset of November 2019. The expectation from Meatco is somehow different as the consignment will be a sustainable business of approximately 4000 Metric Tons per year.
Previously, the coal was transported by road from Botswana to Windhoek. Thus, with this undertaking and as each truck carries 34 Metric Tons, we have profoundly improved road safety, removing approximately 800 trucks off road. Another tender is scheduled to be released but at this time, it is unclear whether it will be awarded to WBBT or another bidder.
Coal is used in the value addition process to generate electricity. Hence, Freight rail transportation and electric power generation is a mutually interdependent business that facilitates an improved rail service delivery to the customers.
