Translating science, empowering patients - LAUNCHED
Matthew Britland
Medical Director and Past President of MAPA (Medical Affairs Professionals of Australasia)
We are delighted to announce the launch of Congress for Patients, a pioneering initiative born out of a shared vision to bridge the gap between complex scientific advancements and patient understanding in the world of oncology.
Committed to empowering patients, one episode at a time, explore our mission at: congressforpatients.com.au
Early this year, Matt Britland from MedWise and Krystal Barter from Humanise Health came together with a common concern: the inaccessibility of major scientific oncology conferences like ASCO 2023 to patients. These discussions led to a determination to pilot an inaugural education initiative, changing the narrative, and making scientific breakthroughs comprehensible and accessible for every patient. Our goal is to empower patients and caregivers, enabling them to actively participate and make well-informed decisions about their conditions and treatment options.
?
Along with Dan Thurley, Huey Wen Lee, and Sandy Minck, our shared passion to patient education and empowerment began with detailed planning and thoughtful distillation of over 25 key themes from ASCO 2023. To ensure we truly create what patients desire, we surveyed over 160 patients in Australia, allowing them to vote for their Top 5 preferred topics. Following this, we established three advisory boards (across lung cancer, breast/gynaecological cancer and rare cancers), comprising 28 esteemed healthcare professionals, patients/advocacy groups, health literacy specialists, and other experts to deeply understand patients' needs in these key topics and their preferred modes of information delivery.

Our commitment to effective communication led us to collaborate with specialists skilled in patient-centric language, simplifying medical jargons and resulting in the development of 8 insightful podcast episodes. Each episode is accompanied by relevant resource links, with one summary episode delivered exclusively in Chinese. These podcasts, in partnership with patient advocacy groups, will be disseminated across the patient community, delivering science in a language that speaks to every patient. This signifies the start of an ongoing learning journey, both for us and the community.
Please help spread/share/repost these valuable resources far and wide and together, let's make healthcare information inclusive and understandable for all. ??
