Transitions. Reflections from (what I hope is) a Social Impact Thoughtful Mentor. Part III

After starting these posts I took a planned break to visit family and friends in the sun. It was wonderful. Transitions require time away. Time to think. Time to relax. Time to enjoy some great meals, a beverage or two, and to reconnect - if only with yourself.

Today's post is more personal than professional but as someone who values work life integration, I hope it offers some inspiration.

These posts may be of interest to those who follow: #socialimpact #purpose #nonprofits #socialinnovation #lifetransitions and those generally seeking to do good, better!

  1. Instead of posting a social impact job, I'm sharing these posts from Kyle Westaway Weekend Briefing . I've been reading these posts for ages and I always find something that resonates. I'm particularly recommending two articles from today's edition: Workaholic Parents and the Year of Living Danishly. As you think about what's next for you, also think about how you define success, about how much we miss as we focus on work, something that is easily justifiable as we are, after all, working to make the world a better place. And compare it to the approach taken in Denmark - a place that, despite the high rate of taxation, consistently scores high on the happiness of their citizens.
  2. Bringing our whole selves to this work. Tomorrow is the 24th anniversary of the date we lost our four year old daughter, Sydney, to hepatoblastoma (liver cancer). Sydney made me a mom and I miss her everyday. I miss seeing the woman she would have become. I miss the graduations. The friends. The partners. The travel. Even the fights I know we would have had. I post this, just as a reminder that the person across the real or virtual room may be having a tough time, not because of their interaction with you, but because of the life journey they have taken. I also offer this as a reminder to hug those you love while you still can and to lead with kindness and compassion.

Sydney Hewitt Mathews (at almost two years of age); Catherine Hewitt (my mom whom we lost in February 2019); and me (pregnant with Bayley Hewitt Mathews) on the Antrim Coast in Northern Ireland, May 1997.

3. Helpful apps for Reflecting. There are so many great apps out there but today I want to recommend Apple's Journal app . Since we always have our phone nearby, I find it easy to reflect and note something down throughout the day. To attach photos. To add "to do's" or even capture ideas. Let me know what you think of it or if you have an app you particularly enjoy using.

Thanks for reading, I plan to be back to the regular format next week.

Allyson, 'all you do' is so very much but I want to thank you for your constant call to be kind and do well and for reminding us that other people have lives too. We become so focused, we can't imagine that others have important things to worry about. People might say "Well, if I'd only known". Maybe we should just assume.

Thank you for sharing this Allyson. I wish more people had the courage to reflect openly and share more of their personality. And I hope you and Bayley are doing well.

Thanks for sharing Allyson. Personal or professional, your posts always provide me with inspiration.
