Transitioning successfully to trunk based development

As continuous deployment has become more and more popular, many companies have attempted to transition from developing code on feature branches to trunk based development. And many have failed.
When we discussed introducing the change on the Moonpig web code base, there were plenty of sceptics. Some feared all out chaos, while others had tried it in previous organisations and seen it fail miserably. Consequently we proceeded with caution.
Ultimately the transition was very smooth and it has proved incredibly successful. If you're considering making the move to trunk based, you might find some useful lessons in our experience.
