Transition to Neurolanguage Coach? - Interview with Alena Zhevnerovich, English teacher, Poland

Can you describe your professional career before taking the language coaching certification (LCC)?

By the beginning of the LCC I had been working as an English teacher for about 20 years. I worked in high education for about 14 years, had a lot of private students (mostly aged 20-40), and taught English for IT specialists for several years.

How did you find the course?

The six weeks I spent on the course were extremely intense, useful, practical-oriented, full of insights. We as learners got a lot of theory about coaching in general, about neurological processes, about language coaching. Then we practiced every piece of the theory within our group (and sometimes had calls with each other during the weekends to practice more).

Which highlights or insights did you gain from the certification course?

First, to create a brain-friendly atmosphere at our sessions we need to take into account all possible aspects, including the awareness of the language, vocabulary and grammar structures we use as coaches. Second, there are many more learning prederences than I had thought before the LCC (not only visual, auditory, kinesthetic and logical) and we can diagnose the learning preferences of our coachees through a skilled coaching conversation. Third, a neurolanguage coach? can use a lot of "tools": for examples, leveraging from their inner motivation, propelling coachee's wishes/habits/interests, other language knowledge, cultural background and way more.

What was the immediate impact on your way of teaching after taking the course?

Even before I completed the course I significantly changed the language I use with my learners. I managed to become more goal-oriented.

Were there any impacts on your personal life during or after the course?

The LCC changed my general view of coaching (including life coaching). Now I am much more aware of how to organise my learning activities (and not only with languages) and help my 16-year-old daughter to organise her learning activities at school. It all happened, because I know what is efficient and not efficient for the brain.

How was your professional development after the course?

I am only starting to continue my professional development after the LCC. I read books about the brain and motivation to understand more.

How has the course changed the way you deliver a language course?

Well, my professional language has completely changed (open questions, different vocabulary, rephrasing). My sessions are structured according to the division into mechanical and mastery goals. We have a goal review every 5-8 sessions, and I use activities chosen by my coachees.

Were there any impacts on your learners?

I believe my learners become more confident quicker than they used to. They get more interested in the learning because they can regulate the processes. They know what they pay for, they have more measurable results than before.

Thank you so much for your feedback, Alena!
