What is Moral Injury?
In traumatic or unusually stressful circumstances, people may perpetrate, fail to prevent, or witness events that contradict deeply held moral beliefs and expectations. When someone does something that goes against their beliefs this is often referred to as an act of commission and when they fail to do something in line with their beliefs that is often referred to as an act of omission. Individuals may also experience betrayal from leadership, others in positions of power or peers that can result in adverse outcomes. Moral injury is the distressing psychological, behavioral, social, and sometimes spiritual aftermath of exposure to such events. Global recognition for Stephen's interfaith ministry work includes:In 1990, directing the national youth leadership "Cycle Across America" project that opened the first toll free hotline for the National Clearinghouse for Drug and Alcohol Information (NCADI). NCADI became the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and the hotline became the SAMHSA 988 Suicide and Crisis Infoline.?
In 1993, the "Run Across America" campaign focused on unmet needs of frontline service programs in 133 cities from Washington, DC to San Francisco, California. The project lead to work with FEMA and Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program to establish unmet needs coordinators in every city/county area of the United States and the HRI:FEMA National City/County Emergency Management Support Network.
After 911, drafting the International Interfaith Peace Declaration for presentation to interfaith leaders in 193 UN member countries, members of World Council of Churches and the UN General Assembly.
Formation of the nonprofit organization Humanitarian Resource Institute in 1994, Interfaith advocacy, mediation and policy development, with a concentration on moral injury, healing and growth with active duty, veterans and first responder community. This included a focus on Human Rights and Legitimacy in Training and Advisory Mission.
In 2020, the pursuit of formalized chaplaincy studies to expand access to resources and capabilities in support of Preservation of the Force and Family (POTFF).On 7 April 2022, prior to a podcast interview with Col. Doug Hurst, CEO, Third Order Effects, LLC, Stephen was ordained as a licensed ministry chaplain, by a global ministry group that included Pastor Henry Reyenga, President, and Brian DeCook, JD, Chairman of the Board of Christian Leaders Institute.
Expansion of interfaith ministry work as Country Music Association Artist and founder of the United Nations Arts Initiative, QPR Suicide Prevention Gatekeeper instructor, Chaplain/Trustee of the 100 year old Lordship Community Church in Stratford, Connecticut.
