TRANSITION MANAGEMENT

TRANSITION MANAGEMENT

The only constant in life is CHANGE. However, it is surprising to see how many of us are unprepared for both personal and professional transitions. Whether change comes through a promotion, an expanded job description, marriage, sickness, parenthood, or a well-deserved retirement, the multiple transitions we face can take us on an emotional rollercoaster of shock, relief, despair, enthusiasm, nostalgia, guilt, joy, anxiety and fear. ??

Recently, I was invited by Go Ahead Africa – a Leadership, Management, Coaching and Consulting firm in Africa – to share my views and experience on transition management. I am honored to share some highlights with you here.

As a young graduate just joining the workforce, the main obstacles encountered include LACK OF EXPERIENCE, dealing with anxiety and doubt, adjusting to work politics, and finding the right mentorship.

The transition into the workforce therefore requires BUILDING COMPETENCE. Building competence will then build confidence. This is a positive reinforcing cycle. However, as you grow in skill, you should also take care to smooth the transition by including others in the journey. Intensive growth in isolation can lead to overconfidence, misguided decision making, and jealousy/sabotage in the workplace.

As an employee changing job roles, companies or geographic locations, the main obstacles encountered are ADAPTING to a new environment, mindset and behavior, enterprise culture, technology systems and company vision.

This type of transition requires FLEXIBILITY and ADAPTABILITY. These traits are achieved through acute observation, empathetic listening and timely action. However, a new environment leaves you more susceptible to being misled and manipulated. Thus, do not always take everything at face value. Investigate, seek truth and stay true to your values. Particularly in supervisory roles, using technology wisely and building diverse teams can be instrumental in increasing adaptability.

As someone who is retiring or transitioning from employee to entrepreneur, the main obstacle encountered is A SLOWER/DIFFERENT PACE. This transition is marked by a less public life, less professional activity, and oftentimes, reduced income.

At this point, you should demonstrate RESILIENCE by remaining active. Investing in the community, practicing sports, engaging in social activities, adapting finances to new realities and connecting with people who share your values are all great ways to counter the isolation that can accompany this transition.

TAKEAWAYS

Major life transitions are unavoidable and can be a stumbling block or a stepping stone. Though transitions can be difficult, viewing them as opportunities for growth will take you far. Therefore, in every transition, you should work on personal development and aim for operational excellence. Transitions are a time when relationships can be fragile, yet when leveraging them is most crucial. Seek interdependence and manage relationships with care. Transitions require that you adapt in terms of activity, finances, and even ways of thinking. Expect them, and prepare for success.

Nana - what a surprise to see your post pop up in my LinkedIn feed. Your words carry profound wisdom. Personal transitions are hard and yet essential milestones during the journey of life. The common thread in your article reminds me of the old isiZulu expression "ubuntu ngumuntu ngabantu" (I am because we are) - my individual humanity is shaped by my relationships with others. A lonely transition is a terrible ordeal, better to embrace the discomfort of seeking new connections to grow and be supported with dignity. P.S. I shall never forget that GeoQuest job interview mid 1997 in Johannesburg when I met you for the first time! That was the start of a lifechanging adventure.
