The Transition from Web2 to Web3 - More Responsibilities to Users with Significantly More Control ??

Dear SelfKey Astronauts,

The digital world undergoes constant evolution, improving on its existing flaws and limitations. The evolution from the first generation of the Internet to the current generation saw some period-defining improvements like the rise of social media.

However, it also brought to light some of the greater risks – like personal data violations, centralized interference of authorities, etc.

The transition of Web2 to Web3 probably won’t be too different, and we will likely see many limitations of Web2 being improved on by Web3 platforms.

Web3, in principle, will be more decentralized than Web2, which essentially means that users will have more control over how a platform should and can function.

For instance, YouTube is a prominent Web2 platform that allows users to post their videos and even generate revenue from them. However, as is the case with most Web2 platforms, YouTube is also a centralized platform.

As a result, users have minimum control over policies (or policy changes) that YouTube makes (or may introduce). For example, currently, content creators can only monetize their channel if they meet a certain number of?eligibility criteria. But these current terms could be changed by YouTube without prior notice to its users, who will simply have to live with it.

Web3 platforms aim to improve on these Web2 issues. On an ideal Web3 platform, users would have governing rights, allowing them to participate in policy-making for the platform. Hence no changes to policies would happen without first notifying – and potentially asking for input from – users first.

Nevertheless, with more control comes more responsibilities. A centralized Web2 platform would always store your login and credentials, which might make it easier for you to request a password reset if you forget one. But, with that, users run the risk of unauthorized access to their profile if a data breach occurs.

Web3, on the other hand, will be fundamentally more decentralized and thus would not store sensitive information in a centralized location online, which could induce more responsibility from users – a user may not be able to log back into their profile with a simple click of a button whenever they forget their password.?

We have already seen the way decentralized wallets like the?SelfKey Wallet?recommend users safeguard their password and keep a seed phrase in a safe location in order to be able to regain access if they forget or lose their password.

The time of Web3 is fast approaching. Web3 users will need to be more responsible for their digital access compared to Web2 users, and the benefits that users gain from that is greater control over their personal data and the platforms they will use on Web3.

SelfKey?embraces a vision of a self-sovereign community of individuals who are more responsible and ultimately have greater control over their identity on Web3.
