Transition to Circular through Renting
The dangerous problem we all face together, globally is getting worse by the day. Every day Earth gets weaker, constantly affected by global warming and climate change. Many proposed solutions have been deemed inadequate. So what should we do?
Various countries are adopting a new strategy by strengthening the Circular Economy. The typical consumption pattern is linear, starting with collecting raw materials, manufacturing products, consuming the products, before finally disposing of them. As most products are non-biodegradable, they contribute to the waste that harms our planet. In contrast, the Circular Economy prioritizes reducing, reusing, and recycling throughout the consumption process to minimize generated waste and the use of raw materials. The Circular Economy has the potential to reduce the “cost” of consuming products, maintain price stability due to controlled demand fulfillment, and have long-term positive impacts to our environment.
Researchers have found remarkable differences on climate change when converting our consumption model from Linear to Circular. By adopting the Circular Economy, Indonesia’s 2030 estimated total waste produced can be decreased by as much as 50% when compared to the Linear consumption model. In certain sectors, the recycling rate can significantly increase, by as much as 17%. Adopting the new consumption pattern can also reduce the total carbon dioxide emission produced to 2.755 million tons, compared to the projected 2.881 million tons. In addition, researchers globally also found the potential of emitting less greenhouse gasses by 39% and reducing the use of new raw materials by 28%.

Around 60 billion tons of raw materials are extracted annually–equivalent to 22 kg per person per day. Of all the raw materials used, only 7% is reused. By implementing the Circular Economy, the importance of reusing raw materials through repairs and renewals will increase. We will no longer depend solely on extracting more raw materials to produce items. The Circular Economy can also extend the life cycle of products, so that the demand for producing new products will decrease and consumer’s needs can still be fulfilled by sacrificing less resources. If this system continues to be prioritized, our opportunity to save raw materials will increase greatly.
The less raw materials are needed, the greater the effect on the amount of energy required for the extraction, transportation, and processing of raw materials. Not to mention, the decreased demand for producing new products will also save a considerable amount of energy. Given that the same product can have a longer life cycle, the energy needed to meet consumers’ needs would be more efficient.?
The Circle Economy Group, supported by the UN Environment and the Global Environment Facility, found that only 9% of the global economy is Circular, despite its importance in combating global warming and climate change. Bioma is committed to actively participate in the Circular Economy movement. Bioma offers an environmentally friendly alternative to the current, unsustainable “take-make-waste” consumption pattern and allows one product to be reused by multiple customers. Bioma will also manage the refurbishment of each item to extend its rental life. And once a product reaches the end of its rental life, Bioma closes the loop by recycling, upcycling, or repurposing the item, thereby minimizing the amount of waste produced. With our model, Bioma believes that it can contribute to resolve existing global problems.?
