Transforming Your Day with The One Thing

In this week's issue, I want to discuss the concept of "The One Thing" and how it has transformed my daily habits and routines. Inspired by Gary Keller’s book The One Thing, this principle has become a cornerstone of my approach to personal and professional growth.

Understanding "The One Thing"

In The One Thing, real estate entrepreneur Gary Keller argues that the key to extraordinary success is focusing daily on the “One Thing” that’s most important for achieving your goal rather than scattering yourself in many directions. Keller and co-author Jay Papasan explain how to determine your goal or life purpose, then focus intensely on getting there while avoiding pitfalls such as multitasking, relying on an unprioritized to-do list, thinking too small, misunderstanding willpower and discipline, and neglecting your personal life. When you know and focus exclusively on the most important thing daily, everything else falls into place. Extraordinary focus on One Thing brings extraordinary success.

My Journey with "The One Thing"

Before "The One Thing," I had not even considered a single routine or habit that could be the bedrock of constant growth and improvement. I have had several "One Things" up to this point, but I believe I have found my One Thing—the one thing I need to do daily to keep me on track, focused, and intentional.

The High-Performance Planner by Brendon Burchard

My One Thing is using the High-Performance Planner by Brendon Burchard. This planner is a comprehensive tool that combines journaling with goal setting, task management, and self-reflection. It features morning and evening prompts, weekly scoring and reflection, and monthly planning and reflection. Each day, the planner prompts me to ask: What must be done today? Who must I focus on? What problems must I address, and how will I address them?

The daily pages include sections for gratitude, writing messages to myself, identifying the priorities for the day, and listing tasks that must be done. The planner provides ample blank space for additional notes and reflections, helping me stay on track with my four main priorities and daily motivational messages. This structured approach keeps me grounded and focused, ensuring my efforts align with my larger goals. Since implementing The One Thing in my routine, I'm now on my fifth planner (see below).

I highly recommend some form of regular journaling, not only to set intentions for the day and organize thoughts and priorities but also to review the day. Reflect on what you learned, what significant events occurred, who you met, and what you can recall in the evening. I suggest writing down everything that happened in the day. This brain dump not only serves as a record you can refer to later, especially after events or networking sessions where you can jot down everyone you met and something memorable about each conversation for follow-up, but it also helps a more restful sleep. Dumping thoughts onto paper instead of letting them swirl in your mind while trying to sleep makes it much easier to relax and drift off.

The GrowthDay App

I also use the GrowthDay application by Brendon Burchard. The app is another essential tool in my habit-building arsenal, complementing the High-Performance Planner by allowing me to input answers to prompts when I am on the go or don't have my planner. The app allows me to journal on my phone for morning and evening prompts and score my progress daily, weekly, and monthly. Brendon also puts out daily audio messages called "Daily Fires" that I listen to after journaling in the planner.

The Impact of Focused Journaling

Regularly using the planner and the GrowthDay app has helped me maintain clarity and purpose. They remind me daily of my priorities and goals. This practice fosters gratitude and keeps me grounded, focused, and driven.

Your One Thing

While journaling and planning work wonders for me, your One Thing might differ. It’s about identifying that essential activity that, when done consistently, sets the tone for the day, continues the momentum, and keeps you on track for the rest of your activities.

I enjoyed journaling. I say enjoyed because for some reason I've fallen off a little bit and haven't been consistent. This is a good reminder for me to get back.
