Transforming Teams: Combating Toxic Leadership and Fostering Growth

Transforming Teams: Combating Toxic Leadership and Fostering Growth

This week we tackle the issue of why talented employees leave a company.

The answer often lies in toxic leadership. My first experience with toxic leadership was in the military. Some of the best and worst leaders I’ve known were there. Early promotions based on points, not skill, often led to unqualified leaders. Over the years, I’ve heard countless stories of people leaving the military due to poor leadership. People don't quit bad companies, they quit bad bosses.

Recognizing that a bad boss might be the root cause of high turnover can take years. It’s tough to see the issues clearly when you’re inside the situation, which is why seeking outside perspectives is invaluable. Building trust and integrity as a leader takes years, but turning a blind eye to toxic behavior can destroy it almost instantly.

Being stuck under a bad boss can feel like you’re up against a wall with no way out. This is just a season, not forever. Focusing on self-leadership and setting healthy boundaries can help you navigate through this period.

Practical tips to help you thrive:

  • Imagine your lantern represents your flame. Protecting it with strong walls ensures it remains illuminated even in the face of adversity.
  • Use simple phrases like, “Don’t speak to me that way, please,” to uphold your boundaries.
  • Maintain your own standards of excellence and seek out mentors or supportive colleagues to stay motivated and productive.

Step-by-Step Plan to Address Toxic Leadership

  1. Recognize the Signs: Pay attention to high turnover rates, low employee engagement, and negative feedback from team members.
  2. Build Trust and Integrity: Consistently communicate with your team, address concerns promptly, and lead by example.
  3. Set Clear Boundaries: Establish what behaviors are acceptable and what are not, and enforce these standards consistently.
  4. Focus on Employee Appreciation: Regularly acknowledge and celebrate your team’s contributions to boost morale and engagement.

Self-Reflection Questions:

  • How can I better recognize and address toxic leadership within my team?
  • What boundaries can I set to protect my well-being and maintain my motivation?
  • How can I appreciate and recognize the efforts of my team members more effectively?
