Transforming Strategic Challenges into Actionable Priorities: A Guide

Transforming Strategic Challenges into Actionable Priorities: A Guide

As we navigate the complex waters of business strategy, it's common to find ourselves overwhelmed with a list of challenges that seem equally critical. Reflecting on the discussions from last week's post, you might realize that identifying these challenges is only the first step.

The real question is, how do we prioritize them effectively to ensure our organization's resilience and growth?

Introducing a pragmatic approach, I like to call "Strategy Triage." This method is designed to help you sift through the myriad of strategic challenges and pinpoint where your focus should be.

Here's how it works:

  1. List Down Your Challenges: Start by jotting down all the strategic challenges you're currently facing.
  2. Evaluate Impact and Threat: For each challenge, assess whether it: (a) Affects your entire organization or just specific parts. (b) Poses a threat to your organization's survival.

To illustrate, let's consider two scenarios:

  • Scenario 1: "We're running out of cash." This is a universal alarm that threatens the very existence of your organization.
  • Scenario 2: "Our HR processes are managed on Excel, and we're overdue for an IT overhaul." While inefficient, this situation doesn't immediately endanger your organization's survival and primarily affects the HR department.

To visualize this prioritization process, imagine a matrix where these considerations help you categorize each challenge based on its urgency and impact.

The Path Forward: It's time to bring your team into the fold. Here's a simple, interactive exercise to engage everyone in this critical thinking process:

  • Encourage each team member to independently list what they perceive as the most pressing strategic challenges.
  • Convert these challenges into post-it notes.
  • Together, categorize these notes within the "Strategy Triage" matrix.

This collaborative effort democratizes the strategy process and ensures a comprehensive understanding of the challenges at hand, fostering a united front in tackling them.

Your Next Steps: I'm eager to hear about your experience with this approach. Gather your team, dive into the "Strategy Triage" exercise, and share your insights with us. How did it reshape your strategic priorities? What unexpected revelations came to light?

Engagement Call: Your insights and experiences are invaluable. Join the conversation below to share how the "Strategy Triage" method worked for you and your team. Together, let's refine our approach to strategy and Make Better Strategy.

Yes, Dr,your strategy triage appears to be quite in order. The major problem Managers/CEOs around the globe have is not formulation of strategy but its execution.Thank God that we now have models and tools for effective strategy execution.Examples abound and they include Norton and Kapla 8-stages for effective strategy execution, the strategy maps by Norton and Kapla, balanced scorecard, the 4-building blocks for effective strategy execution by Harvard Business School etc.
