Transforming Retail Recruitment

Transforming Retail Recruitment

First, tell me about you. You’ve had quite the career in retail.

Cathy, thanks for inviting me! My career has been quite an adventure, deeply rooted in a mission to champion the retail industry and its incredible people.

My academic path took me to FIDM, where I explored Retail Management and Fashion Design. This was a time of exploration, as I wasn't quite sure which direction I was headed. After dabbling in design, I found my calling in retail with a role at GAP Kids in the '90s, and from there, I was completely hooked. The thrill of retail, combined with the joy of working alongside dedicated store teams, was unbeatable.

This passion led me through a decade at GAP, followed by opportunities to lead field teams for brands like West Elm, Apple, and Tory Burch. A move to NYC a decade ago marked my work with the Bonobos Guideshop model, later transitioning to VP of Stores at Saint Laurent and culminating in a role leading INTERMIX under GAP's umbrella, bringing my journey full circle.

You traveled around the country in an Airstream in 2022 and 2023 as the Retail in America Tour. Tell me about the trip, and what you found when meeting with retail teams across 30 states.

The Retail in America Tour in 2022 and 2023 was a pivotal chapter in my career following the release of my book "RETAIL PRIDE." This book is a rallying cry for retail professionals to embrace their often-accidental careers. The tour was an extension of this mission, allowing me to connect with retail teams, celebrate their stories, and bring their experiences to the forefront through my podcast RETAIL IN AMERICA and events across the country.

What’s the philosophy behind OSSY?

Post-tour, the inception of OSSY in January 2024 was a natural progression. With OSSY, we're on a mission to transform retail recruitment. We're creating a platform where retail professionals can find meaningful career opportunities and where retailers can connect with exceptional talent through a unique subscription-based, flat-rate model.

What are some of the benefits retailers will recognize from a better approach to recruiting?

For retailers diving into OSSY, the immediate advantage is our predictable, flat-rate pricing structure, a novel approach in the retail hiring space. We're committed to transparency, fostering long-term relationships, and building a community centered around retail careers.

Do you have a fearless prediction for the future?

My fearless prediction is always the same: bet on the store. The true strength of the retail industry lies in its store teams. They are the unsung heroes, the driving force behind the scenes, and my continuous bet is on their unwavering spirit and resilience.
