Transforming resistence into an engine for change

Transforming resistence into an engine for change

Resistence to change can be really frustrating especially when change needs to happen fast so we don't have time or feel we have time to deal with it. But the solution is really the opposite of what we might think.

The first and most powerful thing we can do is NURTURE THE RESISTANCE: explore it, hear it, understand it. The resistence is gives us so much valuable information about the people we are working with and what drives them. It also provides valuable ideas and challenge that are so critical when working in a space of new ideas and change.

Secondly FOCUS ON WHAT THEY WANT. What is is they want to achieve or gain by keeping things the same. What do they want to achieve through the resistance? Is it a total block to change or is it nuanced? Are they actually not opposed to the change itself but how it is being communicated or managed? Continually asking what they want and what they are trying to achieve immediately moves the focus from the resistance to the solution. When you dig in to what they want, you are likely to find that your aims and objectives are similar.

Finally, try to establish where the FEAR sits. What are you afraid of? What are they afraid of? Exposing and understanding the fears and how likely they are to be realised can move mountains in terms of cutting through resistence in order to build on as well as dispell myths.

But the key is always to honour the other person's perspective, stay with it even when you disagree. Change doesnt require full agreement, it requires us to live and work with the disagreement. Within that you will find golden nuggets with which you can work to change together

Best wishes
