I'm thrilled to share the latest policy council proceedings from the MBR School of Government Mohammed Bin Rashid School of Government and Abu Dhabi Early Childhood Authority that examine a critical yet often overlooked aspect of childhood development—fathers' involvement in early diagnosis and care for Young Children of Determination (YCOD) in the UAE.
This comprehensive research challenges traditional narratives about paternal engagement in the Arab world by directly capturing fathers' voices through focus groups and stakeholder mapping. The findings reveal that fathers are eager to participate but face significant barriers, including:
What makes this research particularly valuable is its practical approach—presenting six evidence-based policy elements that span healthcare, education, workplace, and community sectors to enhance paternal involvement.
The research shows that when fathers actively engage in early intervention, children experience better developmental outcomes, families become more resilient, and care systems improve. But this requires systemic change at multiple levels.
I'm particularly inspired by recommendations around workplace flexibility, cultural sensitivity training, and the creation of father-specific support networks that acknowledge fathers' unique perspectives and needs.
For anyone involved in childhood development, disability advocacy, family policy, or healthcare systems, this publication offers invaluable insights into creating more inclusive support systems for families.
