Transforming Mining Safety: Advancing Mining Industry Standards for a Secure Future
This week Mining Digital looks at the importance of prioritising safety. Safety is one of the most important aspects of the mining industry to ensure the well-being of workers and decrease the risk of injury which in turn allows mines to run more efficiently. The adoption and increase in technology and safety-related technology allows for safety to be the top priority.
These technologies range from anything such as drones, collision avoidance systems, fatigue detection tools and weather detection software. This type of technology means hazards can be detected and measures can be taken in place.
These measures have shown a positive effect as injuries and fatalities have reached an all-time low, and the South African industry has seen a 34% improvement since 2021.
Tech-led innovations promote workplace safety in mining
The mining sector has witnessed significant improvements in safety measures, transitioning from traditional tools to modern technologies with personalised safety features. By integrating tunnel safety devices and location-sensitive alarms, mining companies can now accurately detect potential hazards and take proactive steps to prevent accidents. The adoption of safety technologies is crucial to secure profitable mining contracts, as accidents incur substantial costs and negative publicity. GlobalData Plc 's FutureTech Series report highlights over 30 disruptive forces in mining, including the development of advanced tunnel safety technologies such as sensitive methane sensors and location-sensitive alarms for a safer and more sustainable workplace environment.
