Innovation in materials development is accelerating at an unprecedented pace, thanks to advancements in artificial intelligence and lab automation. Leading this revolution is Altrove, a French deep tech startup that recently raised €3.7 million (approximately $4 million) to fuel its mission. Altrove is set to transform the materials science landscape by leveraging AI models and automated lab processes to create new, groundbreaking materials.
The Challenge of New Materials Development
For decades, research and development in materials science have been sluggish, plagued by bottlenecks in predicting and creating new materials. Thibaud Martin , Altrove’s co-founder and CEO, highlights the monumental task of predicting if materials composed of various elements can theoretically exist. When combining multiple elements, the number of possible combinations skyrockets, making it a daunting challenge for researchers.
“Historically, over the last 50 years, R&D to find new materials has advanced at a very slow pace,” Martin shared. However, the landscape is changing rapidly. Teams from leading tech companies like DeepMind, Microsoft, Meta, and Orbital Materials are developing AI models that overcome traditional calculation constraints, predicting new, stable materials at an unprecedented rate.
AI-Powered Predictions: A Breakthrough
The past nine months have seen more stable materials predicted than in the previous 49 years combined, according to Martin. While this is a significant breakthrough, predicting new materials is only part of the challenge. The next step involves developing the precise recipes for these materials, which include the proportions of elements, the temperature, the order of mixing, and the duration of each step. These variables make the creation of new materials incredibly complex.
Altrove’s Unique Approach
Altrove focuses on inorganic materials, specifically rare earth elements. These elements present a significant market opportunity due to their scarcity, variable pricing, and heavy reliance on Chinese supply chains. By creating new recipes for these elements, Altrove aims to provide alternatives that can reduce dependency on a single source.
Rather than inventing new materials from scratch, Altrove selects promising candidates from the AI-predicted materials and uses its proprietary AI models to generate potential recipes. The company then tests these recipes, producing tiny samples and using a unique characterization technology involving an X-ray diffractometer. This process helps determine if the resulting material performs as expected.
“It sounds trivial but it’s actually very complicated to check what you’ve made and understand why. In most cases, what you’ve made isn’t exactly what you were looking for in the first place,” Martin explained.
Automating the Iteration Loop
The key to Altrove’s innovation lies in its plan to automate the lab processes. Learning from each characterization step and improving the recipes is crucial for developing new materials. By automating these processes, Altrove aims to test more recipes simultaneously and accelerate the feedback loop.
“We want to build the first high throughput methodology. Pure prediction only takes you 30% of the way to having a material that can really be used industrially. The other 70% involves iterating in real life,” Martin said. Automation increases throughput and allows for parallel experimentation, speeding up the development of usable materials.
Altrove’s co-founder and CTO, Joonatan Laulainen, brings significant expertise in materials science and characterization, holding a PhD in the field. This expertise, combined with proprietary intellectual property related to characterization, positions Altrove at the forefront of the materials science revolution.

A Vision for the Future
Altrove envisions itself as a hardware-enabled AI company, planning to sell licenses for its newly developed materials or produce them in partnership with third parties. The recent funding round, led by Contrarian Ventures and supported by notable investors like Thomas Clozel, Julien Chaumond, and Nikolaj Deichmann, underscores the confidence in Altrove’s vision.
Drawing inspiration from biotech companies that utilize AI to discover new drugs and treatments, Altrove aims to replicate this success in materials science. The startup plans to build its automated lab by the end of the year and intends to sell its first asset within 18 months.
