TRANSFORMING LIVES: The Unseen Power of Leadership Beyond Profit

TRANSFORMING LIVES: The Unseen Power of Leadership Beyond Profit

When I set up UK for Good my aim was to 'inspire, inform, and enable businesses to better understand and improve their impact on people, communities, and our planet'.?

That purpose hasn't changed.

What has changed in the past four years is the pace of change.

With each passing week my newsfeed becomes increasingly concerning and the need to adapt is much more urgent. And that can sometimes feel overwhelming.

?There are some days where I actively seek sources of inspiration myself. Podcasts such as 'Hope is a Verb' help.

?So in this week's newsletter I would like to offer some inspiring examples of courageous leadership that challenge us all to think about our own legacy.

My research began with the actor Michael Sheen who sold his property to support the homeless, while Yvon Chouinard gave away Patagonia to fight climate change and shape a better future.

?Nearer to home Phyll Opoku-Gyimah, also known as Lady Phyll, is a powerful advocate for equality and social justice. As the co-founder of UK Black Pride, she has tirelessly worked to uplift marginalised communities, redistributing her resources and influence to create a fairer, more just world.

?These leaders show that true success lies in using our resources to help others and address the Wicked problems facing our society, from food insecurity, to homelessness, and biodiversity loss.

?In the UK alone, 9.7 million people are in food insecurity while millions of tonnes of food go to waste. At the same time, thousands are homeless despite the resources being available to provide shelter for all.

?The truth is clear: there is enough to go round, but it’s poorly distributed.

?As business leaders, we have the power to change this.

?So what can you and your business do today to improve your impact on people and our planet?

?Whether through philanthropy, policy changes, or community engagement, your actions can make a difference.

?Let’s lead with courage and compassion to create a world where everyone has enough.

UK for Good endorses Plant Based Treaty

'Everything, everywhere, all at once' is the plea from António Guterres

It's becoming increasingly clear that we cannot solve the metacrisis 'simply' by reducing our reliance on fossil fuels.

Developing our diets to shape a better future plays a fundamental role in shaping a better future.

We are proud to join individuals, groups, businesses and cities to endorse this call to action and put pressure on national governments to negotiate an international Plant Based Treaty as a companion to the UNFCCC Paris Agreement.

The treaty would put food systems at the heart of combating the climate crisis, aiming to halt the widespread degradation of critical ecosystems caused by animal agriculture, to promote a shift to more healthy, sustainable plant-based diets and to actively reverse damage done to planetary functions, ecosystem services and biodiversity

I’m delighted to share that we will be hosting a unique Fireside Chat with 'The Godfather of Sustainability'John Elkington and discussing his new book: 'Tickling Sharks: How We Sold Business on Sustainability.'

The book is written in a knowledgeable, thoughtful, and humorous voice, this witness statement explains—and criticises—progress to date before sketching a manifesto for those determined to make the global economy more responsible, more resilient, and, crucially, more regenerative.

Today is the day when young people across the UK will receive their exam results. It's made me reflect on how much I have learned since I received mine (over 40 years ago!). The most important lessons I have learned about life and leadership have been in the past five years. That may offer anybody not receiving the results they hoped for today (or their parents) cause for optimism. Some years ago I read the Blue Sweater by Jacqueline Novogratz. I can pinpoint it as an inflection point for me. It helped me understand the impact of transformative leadership. Other impactful examples are Kresse Wesling CBE Eden Tadesse Minou Schillings Jason Hickel Rutger Bregman Daniel Schmachtenberger Tim Maiden John Elkington Solitaire Townsend....there are many more. The common bond between them all is the sheer determination to shape a better world. Who do you consider your inspiring, transformative leaders?
