A few months ago, I started noticing something interesting on LinkedIn. Some of the connections I admire were getting these cool ???????? ?????????? ??????????????. Curious, I decided to dig deeper to see what it takes to earn one. Soon, I was ???????????? on the LinkedIn’s new ?????????????????????????? ???????????????? feature.
To my delight, I ended up earning Top Voice badges in ???????????????????????????? ???????????????????? and ???????????????? ???????????????? ?????? ??????????????????????.
And it did not stop there...
As someone who works in the Learning and Development space, I was fascinated by how this new feature was getting so many people involved. As I took a closer look at what's happening around LinkedIn, I realized that this is ???????????????????????? ???? ????????????.
?? ???????? ???? ???????????????????????????
Gamification means using ????????-???????? ???????????????? ???? ??????-???????? ???????????????? to make things more engaging and fun. It's about tapping into our love for competition, achievement, and social interaction. For example, fitness apps often use points, leaderboards, and challenges to motivate users to exercise more regularly.
?????? ?????????? ???????????????? ???? ????????????????????????
Let us take a look at the eight elements of Gamification and how LinkedIn is using these with its collaborative Articles feature:
#1: ??????????????????????
Empowerment is about giving people control and choice. LinkedIn’s Collaborative Articles let you share your knowledge and insights on topics you care about. You can pick what to write about and see your work published, making you feel more invested in what you’re creating.
#2: ???????? ??????????????
Epic meaning makes you feel part of something bigger. By contributing to LinkedIn’s Collaborative Articles, you are adding to the collective knowledge of the professional community. It’s not just about the badges; it’s about being recognized as a thought leader and making a difference in your field.
#3: ????????????????????????????
Accomplishment is a major motivator. LinkedIn's Top Voice badges acknowledge your hard work and expertise. These badges are a visible recognition of your efforts, motivating you to keep contributing and sharing your insights.
#4: ???????????? ??????????????????
Social influence uses the power of social interactions, like collaboration and competition. Seeing your peers get Top Voice badges can inspire you to contribute too. Plus, Collaborative Articles foster networking and collaboration, enhancing the sense of community.

#5: ????????????????????????????????
Unpredictability keeps things exciting by adding surprise elements. LinkedIn’s algorithm for selecting Top Voices is a bit of a mystery, which adds an element of unpredictability. You’re motivated to consistently create high-quality content because you never know which post might earn you a badge.
#6: ??????????????????
Avoidance is the desire to avoid negative outcomes or losses. On LinkedIn, there’s a subtle pressure to maintain your reputation and status. This might push you to contribute regularly so you don’t fade into obscurity or lose your Top Voice status.
#7: ????????????????
Scarcity makes achievements more desirable by limiting them. Top Voice badges are exclusive; not everyone can get one, making them highly sought after. This exclusivity drives users to work harder to stand out.
#8: ??????????????????
Ownership gives you a personal connection to what you’re doing. By contributing to Collaborative Articles, you feel a sense of ownership over the topics you write about. This personal investment makes you take pride in your contributions and feel more connected to the LinkedIn community.
The LinkedIn’s Collaborative Articles feature is a great example of gamification at work. By incorporating these elements of Gamification, LinkedIn has become a more engaging and motivating platform.
As Karl Kapp , the professor of Instructional Technology and the author of the book The Gamification of Learning and Instruction says:
Games and Gamification both can lead to high levels of learner engagement and motivation.
