Transforming Healthcare at One Medical
Over the past decade, technology has been at the center of bringing advancement and transformation in various industries. The pandemic put an extra exclamation point on the urgency and need for transformation. We have felt the impact of technology in all sectors, and none more so than healthcare. Societies have had to devise new ways of using technologies to provide much-needed and urgent services to their people. Having worked on Gov Tech for the past few years, I have seen firsthand how software is making an impact on communities and people everywhere. This brings me to another industry that has been of interest to me personally - Healthcare.
Healthcare is a vast domain covering everything from clinics/hospitals and provider operations, primary and alternative care, pharmaceuticals, wellness, mental health and wellness, and many more. A decade ago, Marc Andreessen penned software is eating the world, where he wrote: "Health care and education, in my view, are next up for fundamental software-based transformation." Despite the progress so far, I believe this is still the beginning - the domain is complex, the problems to be solved are hard and many, and the potential to make a positive impact is immense.
One company I was impressed by is One Medical. On their website, I saw a bold statement "Care whenever you need it, in person or in your PJs". Sounds amazing, right? I also heard from my friends who are members of One Medical and was delighted to learn they love it. Every family has some trouble getting timely and better care. Getting a timely appointment with my physician can be hard, and even when I do get one, I am not satisfied with the quality of time and care. As a doctor's son, I have seen how much (a lot, a lot!) time my dad used to spend with his patients. Perhaps things were simpler back then. Our healthcare system can be daunting to deal with nowadays, not just to us care receivers, but also to the care providers. You hear about the amount of administrative work a doctor has to do, eating away precious time from their primary function - doing what she loves caring for her patients. Doctors want nothing more than to spend more time with their patients and take good care of them. One Medical makes that possible with its mission to make getting quality care more affordable, accessible, and enjoyable for all through a blend of human-centered design, technology, and an exceptional team. A win-win for both caregivers and members.
Today, I am humbled and honored to join them as their Vice President of Engineering and work with a stellar team to advance One Medical's journey of transforming healthcare. I was inspired by the leadership of Amir Dan Rubin, Stuart Parmeter, Anjali Jameson, Anne Aula, Christine Morehead, and everyone I met. The team and culture exemplify what it means to be a mission-driven company, and I am looking forward to driving that mission forward.?
I see exciting possibilities ahead of how we can continue to use technology innovation to advance healthcare. The possibilities are unlimited - an intersection of technology's potential and humanity's need - leveraging big data, analytics, machine learning, AI, genomics, and smart health devices to serve this mission. There is much work to be done to advance healthcare tech while empowering people to learn, know and manage their own health. I believe more and more healthcare is moving to the edge into the hands of people, where it is needed and will be most effective.
