1. Can you tell us about your journey as a Filipino nurse in the diaspora? What inspired you to pursue a career in nursing?

Over three decades ago, I made a last-minute decision to enroll in the Nursing Program at Riverside College in Bacolod City, initially unsure of my career path as I had considered becoming an agriculturist. However, my desire to make a difference and serve others led me to Nursing. Riverside College, with its motto “Lux et Caritas” (Light and Charity), provided a strong foundation that shaped me into a nurse capable of making a global impact. The program taught me respect, compassion, and the importance of assisting those in need. Riverside was a good training ground for nurses, offering experiences in communities, public and private hospitals, and diverse healthcare settings, providing top-notch training.

As I advanced through the program, my purpose in nursing became clear. Riverside College prepared me not only to provide exceptional patient care but also to lead with light and charity.

The education and experiences I gained there instilled in me the values of respect and compassion, essential for assisting those in need. Reflecting on my journey, I am grateful for the solid foundation Riverside College provided. The values of respect, compassion, and charity are timeless and transcend borders. My career as a nurse has been a testament to the impact that a solid educational foundation and a commitment to serving others can have. From Bacolod City to the global stage, my journey continues to be driven by the desire to make a difference in whatever small ways I can.

2. What are some of the highlights of your nursing career thus far?

One of the highlights of my nursing career is serving as the President of the American Nephrology Nurses Association Windy City and the incoming President of the Philippine Nurses Association of Illinois. Leading these organizations is incredibly rewarding because it allows me to support fellow nurses, promote professional development, and encourage excellence in nursing practice.

Additionally, I am deeply honored to have been appointed to the Illinois Board of Nursing, which I consider the pinnacle of my career. This role enables me to make significant contributions to the nursing profession and improve public safety through the Illinois Nurse Practice Act. Being on the Board of Nursing is particularly gratifying because it allows me to ensure high standards in nursing as well as protect public health. It also provides a platform to influence policy, advocate for the needs of nurses, and address critical issues facing the healthcare system.

3. As a prominent figure in the nursing community, what do you see as the most significant challenges facing Filipino nurses in the diaspora today?

I see several significant challenges facing Filipino nurses in the diaspora today. These include navigating cultural and language barriers, adapting to different healthcare systems, and coping with potential discrimination or bias in the workplace. Additionally, there is the emotional strain of being away from family and home.

Despite these challenges, I believe in the power of perseverance. As they say, a small ripple can make big waves. As nurses, we often underestimate our impact because we think caring is just part of what we do, not realizing that we touch people's lives in profound ways and even impact our communities. By continuing to demonstrate dedication, compassion, and excellence, Filipino nurses can make a meaningful and lasting difference globally.

4. Could you share any memorable experiences or achievements that have shaped your career?

I’ve had the honor of experiencing several memorable moments and achievements in my career, such as receiving the Nurse Hero Award from the Philippine Nurses Association of Illinois and the Outstanding Nurse Award from the National Kidney Foundation. While these recognitions are deeply appreciated, my true motivation lies in the initiatives and community services I passionately pursue. It’s the impact and positive change that drive me.

I’ve realized that people do notice our efforts. Recognition not only honors us but also amplifies our impact, inspiring others to follow. By celebrating these achievements, we highlight the importance of our work and encourage more positive contributions in our communities.

5. In your opinion, what unique strengths do Filipino nurses bring to healthcare systems abroad?

Filipino nurses are known worldwide for their strong work ethic, dependability, compassion, and resilience. These qualities are rooted in our “Bayanihan Spirit”, reflecting our tradition of helping others selflessly. The core values of a Filipino nurse for me can be summarized in the word CARE, which stands for Compassionate, Adaptable, Resilient, and Empathetic. These four qualities make Filipino nurses unique in healthcare.

6. How do you balance your professional responsibilities with your personal life and commitments?

I firmly believe that when you are passionate about what you do, you find a way to overcome challenges. Being involved in voluntary professional organizations adds another layer of commitment. While it is not mandatory to commit all the time, asking for help from other team members or officer and learning to say no when necessary are crucial. I’ve learned that making a difference is possible, especially when fueled by a passion to serve. Having a supportive family who understands my commitments makes a significant difference. Though there may be naysayers, witnessing the impact of our work often changes perceptions, and they become some of our supporters. It’s essential to remember that while balancing these responsibilities, it’s okay to prioritize and set boundaries to maintain sanity and effectiveness in both professional and personal life.

7. Can you discuss any initiatives or projects you are currently involved in that aim to support Filipino nurses or improve healthcare outcomes?

I am currently involved in several initiatives with my organization to support Filipino nurses and improve healthcare outcomes. I help organize kidney and diabetes screenings and health fairs in Filipino communities and other areas in need. These events provide vital health services and education, helping to detect and manage chronic conditions early. The Philippine Nurses Association of America helps acclimate new nurses to the country, and our local chapter, PNAI, welcomes and assists them in transitioning and addressing workplace challenges. Through these efforts, we aim to improve overall health outcomes and empower Filipino nurses to take on leadership roles in promoting public health.

8. How do you envision the future of Filipino nursing in the global healthcare landscape?

I envision the future of Filipino nursing in the global healthcare landscape as one of continued growth and influence. Filipino nurses will increasingly be recognized for their exceptional skills, compassion, and dedication. As healthcare becomes more interconnected, Filipino nurses will play a crucial role in addressing global health challenges, fostering cultural competence, and improving patient care worldwide. Through perseverance and commitment, we will continue to make significant contributions, shaping a brighter future for global healthcare.

9. Lastly, what does being featured in the PINNACLE article series mean to you personally, and what message would you like to convey to your fellow Filipino nurses??

This is a deeply meaningful honor for me. It provides an opportunity to share my journey and, hopefully, inspire others to do the same. While not everyone may choose to share their story, it is crucial to acknowledge the profound impact we have on our patients, communities, and beyond. For me, recognition is secondary; what truly matters is the sense of fulfillment I derive from what I do. I encourage my fellow Filipino nurses to continue treating everyone with respect, providing compassionate care, supporting our communities, advocating for those in need, and leading by example. Together, we can promote equity and make a significant, lasting difference in the world.

The PINNACLE series aims to highlight Filipino nurses' diverse career paths and achievements, foster connection, and celebrate excellence within our community.
