Transforming energy use across three key sectors

Welcome to the October issue of Power Up! Today, we're featuring Olivier Blum 's latest blog on energy optimization through prioritizing the three biggest sectors (buildings, industry, and transport). We also have Manish Pant 's blog on tackling energy poverty with minigrids; reducing the environmental impact of buildings with material selection; investing in future energy professionals with digital training; and lastly, highlights from the recent Enlit Europe event in Milan. Enjoy — and please drop a comment with what you'd like to see more of in this newsletter!

By Olivier Blum , EVP Energy Management

Today’s energy demand continues to increase rapidly as a result of a rising global population, economic growth and climate change. At the same time, 60% of global energy production is currently lost or wasted before it even reaches consumers. To meet the escalating demand, optimizing energy use is essential.?

The ‘demand’ side of the energy equation is an often overlooked component of tackling the climate and energy crises. Properly addressed, it could decarbonize 55% of the energy sector by 2050.?

One major solution is what we call Electricity 4.0 — the combination of electrification and digitization. This helps transition to cleaner energy and optimize energy use, prioritizing the three sectors responsible for 94% of energy-related emissions: buildings, industry, and transport.?

Tackling energy poverty: the necessary rise of minigrids

EVP, International Operations Manish Pant 's latest blog post highlights the urgent need to expand access to reliable and affordable clean electricity for over 1.5 billion people, particularly in developing countries. This forms part of a swift energy transition to address energy poverty and mitigate climate change.

Minigrids and microgrids are crucial for providing independent and affordable power to underserved populations, with the potential to bring electricity to around 500 million people by 2030.

Standardizing minigrid designs and production is key to accelerating their widespread adoption, offering benefits such as cost reduction, simplified manufacturing, and enhanced safety.
