The Horizon Praxis Movement is a concept centred around the application of systems thinking, emotional intelligence and innovative strategies to solve complex local and global challenges. It involves a structured process known as the Innovation Matrix, which is used by organizations to address ambitious business (including risk analysis) and organizational challenges through to discovering new patents, business models, and the launch of startups. This approach is celebrated for its ability to provoke new solutions and uncover powerful insights previously unseen, often employed by major corporations like Shell Global Solutions and supported by Learning institutions worldwide for its innovative educational applications.
The concept of "Innovation Praxis" involves the practical application of theoretical ideas, primarily in areas like Innovative thinking. This concept emphasizes the continuous interaction between theory (ideas and critiques) with practical actions including AI. The goal is to foster societal change by keeping theory and practice in an ongoing and reflective dialogue.
The "Horizon Praxis Movement" extends this idea. It uses systems thinking - a method that addresses complex problems by understanding the system as a whole - to drive innovation and address real-world issues. This movement also adheres to the philosophical idea of praxis, where theories aren't just passive guides but like systems thinking are actively used to shape and improve practical approaches with AI in real time.
This approach originated from concerns within the U.S. Intelligence Advanced Research Projects about the lack of consistent good judgment and emotional intelligence in broader society. The focus on preconceptions and bias in this research facilitated a new way of thinking that was adopted by many powerful institutions like NASA. This framework leads to scenario planning, and the Meta-Innovation Matrix?which helps anticipate and plan for multiple future scenarios, thereby enabling better decision-making based on a more holistic and incisive interpretation of the information, both from quantitative and qualitative statistics from AI - available now and in the future.
Start-ups and solution makers Beware!
This critiques traditional problem-solving approaches, arguing that thinking about solutions as static 'end-states' is flawed. This is because even in physics, especially quantum variables can change, and human behaviour is even less predictable. The point here is that all solutions should be adaptive and flexible, acknowledging that problem-solving, especially involving humans, is never a one-and-done scenario. This is why start-ups often struggle (70-80% fail within the first year according to Birch - (not good odds). Here's the thing, 2 - 5 years isn't a lot better with almost 60% failure rate, according to research (Birch again) where the more fixed mindset in their branding or strategy - the less able they can pivot when new and significant feedback information emerges. That is what the meta-innovation process delivers - a new and better way of thinking based on 10 years of scientific research initially started by M.I.T and subsequently conducted by the U.S. IARPA - it is now supported by many institutions and corporations around the world - surprisingly - not so well adopted and integrated by the public sectors; Healthcare and the Education Establishments. Invariably this has an impact on economic proficiency as well as wellbeing in the workplace.
A note on Systems Thinking - In our exploration of Systems Thinking, we collaborated with distinguished scientists and business leaders to analyze the aftermath of the Deepwater Horizon (BP) incident. Our goal was to establish a clear set of facts. We've integrated these insights into our case study assessments to enhance our understanding and recommendations. We examined ''route cause seduction" and many other contributing factors such as "emotional Intelligence and critical thinking."

OK, Well, who is using these Innovation processes?
We have delivered successful Systems Thinking approaches for organizations such as Shell, ABB, Rolls Royce, Unilever, the Chartered Institute of Marketing and many Startups. Other notable organizations using these processes include General Electric, the Singapore Government, NASA, Space X, Harvard Business School, Pepsi-Co, Microsoft and the University of Birmingham Business School on my MBA course. I also had the privilege of tutoring Leaders and Executives for growing businesses at the London Business School at the Innovation Exchange. Embedding emotional intelligence into the organizational fabric creates an adaptable harmony that is future-proofed through cultural resilience and Adaptable Leadership readiness and maximizes effectiveness.

1 周Great article, John Rainford FRSA FTLS!??
In the current US-China rivalry, the phenomenon of Unintended Consequences has manifested itself over and over again. By banning China from being part of the Space Station, the US hoped to thwart China progress in space. The result has been a resurgent China launching the state of the art Tiangong space station. The key to understanding and learning from this is Systems Thinking. Simple, instinctive action yield immediate short term results but often engender unforseen second order outcomes that are more detrimental to the cause- hence the unintended consequences. And if we want to see history repeat itself, we already have the semiconductor ban and Trump trade tariffs as powerful case studies The Horizon Praxis Movement should be embraced by corporations and organizations seeking powerful insight into sustainable and effective ideation, planning and execution. It is a powerful and comprehensive approach to combine the insight of Systems Thinking, the exploration of Strategic Thinking and the human-centred implementation approach of EQ. Truly a game changer in leadership development.
