Transforming Banjul Airport Terminal: A Concession Development to Enhance Travel Efficiency and Passenger Experience

International Airport through a public-private partnership (PPP) concession. This comes in response to significant growth in air travel demand that has led to overcrowding of the apron and passenger terminal.

In January, the Gambian Ministry of Transport, Works and Infrastructure issued a request for proposals to design, build, finance, operate, maintain and eventually transfer the new terminal. Bids were due by February 15.

Banjul International Airport, also known as Yundum International Airport, is The Gambia's primary gateway for international air travel. In 2022, the airport handled over 180,000 arriving passengers.

The Gambian government is utilizing PPPs to expand other key infrastructure as well. Recently, it awarded a concession to expand the Port of Banjul and build a new deep seaport at Sanyang village. The concessionaires include Turkish and Saudi Arabian firms.

Additionally, Spain's Grupo Rodman won a concession to rehabilitate the Banjul shipyard. The 30-year agreement involves upgrading facilities and equipment.

The transport ministry also sought proposals for a study to develop an integrated and climate-resilient national transport master plan. This effort is supported by the African Development Bank.
