Tech industry expecting more layoffs, but say hiring coming too this year

Toast is on a mission to help women. They do this through a membership-based women’s collective founded to flip the hiring dynamic in favour of women in tech.?Co-Founder April Hicke chatted with BNN Bloomberg 's Tara Weber about the tech hiring outlook for 2024.

Two weeks into January, major tech firms such as 谷歌 , 亚马逊 , Discord , Instagram and Duolingo have already made job cuts and several other firms are rumoured to soon be following suit.

Even as industry members and observers expect the cuts to continue, they're optimistic that layoffs won't hit last year's levels.

"I don't think that this is going to be anywhere close to the layoffs of 2023,"

said April Hicke , Co-Founder of women's tech collective and talent organization Toast .

Megadeals power second year of high-tech investment in Alberta, while appetite for early-stage startups remains weaker

Alberta’s budding tech sector overcame a tricky 2023 to nearly match 2022’s record levels of venture capital and private equity investment, featuring an increase in megadeals and a more conservative investor approach to early-stage startups, early numbers show.

And as the province charts its path toward maturity, players in the sector are hoping to see growing interest in budding companies that lack the same investor market as the heavy hitters.
