Transformers & 3D Printing Nerd is more than meets the eye...
3D Printing Nerd produced an activation with Paramount Pictures to help launch Transformers: Rise of the Beasts. A variety of engagements brought the robotic franchise into the science and additive communities including a $100,000 3D Print by Velo3D, an episode of Adam Savage’s Tested and the first ever release of official downloadable 3D printable files for free by a studio.
The head of Optimus Primal, a newly revamped character added to the cinematic Transformers world, was 3D Printed at the full volume on the Velo3D Sapphire XC. The material of choice was inconel 718 and the print took 5.5 days to complete. As you can see in the episode, this creation is a thing of beauty. With a timelapse like that, how can you not be in awe at what Velo3D is doing?
Once completed, the head and custom stand were taken to H.E.R.C. (Hacksmith Engineering Research Campus) where 3D Printing Nerd teamed up with namesake and good friend, the Hacksmith! Together they showed the world what this material can handle and how strong it truly is. This was the closest anyone has gotten to creating what an actual Transformer would be made out of. When the light saber that hits 4,000°F+ comes out, your mind is going to be blown.

The 3D Printing Nerd episode wrapped up at H.E.R.C. and headed back to the states for a visit with Adam Savage on an episode of his show Tested. This was put together to allow Joel Telling , the host of 3D Printing Nerd to discuss the science behind the material and how the project came to be… and to catch up and nerd out on everything Transformers.

With all filming completed, the print was escorted to the Red Carpet premiere of Transformers: Rise of the Beasts in Brooklyn, NY. Host of 3D Printing Nerd, Joel Telling, and myself ( David Tobin , Executive Producer) were asked to walk the carpet and talk about the project with media. It was a fantastically massive event that allowed the stars of the show and fans to not only see the 3D Printed head made of Inconel 718, but also feel it!

The final piece of the activation is the most notable. 3D Printing Nerd worked with Paramount Pictures to release the first ever official downloadable models from a film. Two were created based on the actual art from the film. The head that was printed for the project is one design, and the second is a print-in-place full Optimus Primal action figure. Both files are available for free on Printables.com in the official Paramount Pictures account.

There will be more models to come and a lot more activations with additive in media. 3D Printing Nerd is currently working with various networks, studios and even bands to help bring their brand into the additive world.
It’s a wonderful time to be a nerd!
