AI is the talk of the town right now, and it’s no wonder—everywhere you look, it’s transforming industries and reshaping the way we work. But if you’ve followed the field for a while, you know it’s been a long time coming.
We’ve had these periods called "AI winters" where excitement fades and progress slows. But something’s different this time.
We’re at a turning point—a massive inflection in how AI is developing and impacting our world.
The Paper That Changed Everything
Let’s rewind to 2017. That’s when a white paper titled "Attention Is All You Need" came out of Google. Now, this this might sound like just another research paper, but it introduced something called the transformer—a new way for AI to process information.
And honestly, this paper has had a bigger impact on the tech world than almost anything else, maybe even more than the famous Bitcoin white paper.
So, what’s so special about transformers? Well, in simple terms, they allow AI to handle vast amounts of data while still making sense of the context.
Before transformers, AI models could get overwhelmed by too much information, struggling to understand the bigger picture.
Transformers, though, can connect the dots and understand how different pieces of data relate to one another. This breakthrough laid the foundation for the tools we’re seeing today, like ChatGPT and various AI art generators.

Scaling Up: How OpenAI Took It Further
Fast forward a bit, and we get to OpenAI. They took the transformer model and ran with it—on a massive scale. How massive? They trained their models on the entire internet.
That’s how we got ChatGPT, which can generate human-like text that’s useful for everything from writing emails to coding assistance.
The thing is, most of what we’re seeing right now—like the improvements in ChatGPT and other AI tools—comes from squeezing every last drop out of that transformer breakthrough.
Whether it’s improving customer service, automating routine tasks, or enhancing marketing strategies, businesses across the board are starting to leverage AI to gain a competitive edge.
However, we’re still in the early stages, mostly refining what’s already been developed. The real game-changer will come with the next big innovation.
What Do We Need Now?
Now, here’s where it gets interesting.
While transformers have been game-changing, we’re starting to hit the ceiling of what they can do.
Even Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, has said that if we’re still using transformers five or ten years from now, it means we’re probably stuck.
To get to the next level—think Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), where AI can reason and think more like a human—we’re going to need new breakthroughs.
