The IBC2023 winners of the prestigious Innovation Awards, celebrating ground-breaking initiatives transforming the media industry landscape, have been announced. Highlighting the transformative tech that is driving the industry forward, the Innovation Awards recognised the BBC and its partners, who won the Content Creation award for creating the world’s largest pop-up 5G standalone non-public network for live broadcast contributions using shared spectrum. TECHNICAL PAPERS: HOW AI IS ADVANCING MEDIA PRODUCTION

The media world is focussing huge concern on the capabilities of AI which threatens to outperform humans, not only in laborious production tasks but also in the creative arts. This technical paper session examined three aspects of the power of AI to influence the future of media creation. First, multi-disciplinary teams from a prestigious institute delved into the future of AI news journalism. Next was an advanced Japanese AI technology which aims to benefit those of us with busy lives: a system which can edit a TV programme down to an arbitrarily short duration. Finally, a remarkable AI technology which can identify the nature and intensity of emotion in a dramatic scene and then compose and perform background music to accompany it. IBC2023 ACCELERATORS PROJECT HIGHLIGHT

CONNECT & PRODUCE ANYWHERE

Detaching production teams from an event location brought us remote production. In this project, the aim was to detach software from hardware and deploy a distributed computing architecture between ground and cloud, exploring the benefits & challenges of such an approach.?

By dynamically moving live production media processing stages between cloud and edge computing at an event, the project can allow production crews to deploy software to the best location making the most efficient use of resources in locations where bandwidth and connectivity can vary greatly.
